Last of the Lake Art

Before I wrap all of summer I wanted to share what I call the last of the lake art! This piece was done from a photo I took from our wee balcony at our Paris hotel, almost one year ago. At night it was so pretty because you could see the tower twinkle!

Below is a three part experiment. I wondered if I could repair a very bad watercolor I had done six or seven years ago and kept only so I could use the back of the page for mixing paint. It's very "flat." I'm wondered -- did I do this in watercolor pencil? I see more sketch lines that never really blended as well and that sometimes happens with the pencils.

First, I added a lot of color and enhanced the reflections on the water. It already looked much better.

To finished, I added some details with Micron pen. It made everything stand out better. Unfortunately, I couldn't do much with the beach towel, but as a practice piece, I was relatively happy.

This little sparrow has a slightly demented look in its eye! I think the eye is too big but was at a point where "erasing" and correction was impossible. I'll have to try again! But the rest I'm pretty happy with.

And I leave you with another portrait of my girl.

What a model!

  1. Your painting with sail boat and beach umbrella turned out great. That micron pen made all the difference. Love your bird and cat as well.

  2. To be honest.... I cannot decide on which of the experiment-states is the most beautiful one - each of the three has something special!
Your Lizzie sure is a very cute good-bye, too!

  5. All the paintings are nice. I like the pen detail too. Oh that sweet little sparrow is a good one. Great detail on the cat too. You did have a fun summer my friend. But I know you and Rick will enjoy some long weekends at the lake. I certainly hope you do. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  9. You will have to let us know the name of the gallery when you have your first show, so that we can all flock to it, to share art chit chat and canapés with the paparazzi, and namedrop shamelessly that we knew you when. I suggest late fall. It is always agreeable to be at an exhibition when leaves are burgundy and gold, and the Burgundy in the glass is robust and old. Please be sure Dahling, to have a little sharp Stilton; it adds to the moment and compliments the crispness of the air. Brie is so inadequate at such moments. Now where did I put my polished walnut cigarette holder with the mouthpiece of burnished brass?

  13. I especially love the wee Parisian sketch, but am impressed how you have improved the lake scene so much. It just goes to show what working back in can do to something we are not happy with.

  14. Your beach experiment turned out unbelievable. I was thrilled with the first one, but seeing how well you improved it, made me realize how much you have accomplished over the last years. And your model is gorgeous. Bleubeard is now jealous. He somehow thinks I can paint something like that. DUH. I can't draw a snowman and it's just circles and a hat. Beautiful works, all, dear Jeanie.

  32. I like your thought process and how you work through the paintings. Lizzie is a good model and you've made a nice painting of her.

  33. I think the beach towel really works. It looks like some crafty person did some tie-dye, and it's a nice contrast the boat and umbrella. I agree that the bird's eye isn't quite 'right,' but I'm not sure it's the size.It might be that the eye ring is a little too dark. Looking at it, I wondered if showing a separation between the upper and lower parts of the beak might not balance it, without making any changes at all to the eye.
(Listen to me, who knows nothing --NOTHING! -- about art!) Lizzie, of course, is perfect, purr usual.

  34. I especially love Lizzie and the sparrow. I don't see a problem with the eye size.

  35. What a difference in the original and then the re-done beach scene, Jeanie. And that little sparrow does seem to have an evil eye.
