After an early autumn at the Ditch, it was time to venture farther afield for a little beauty! That means a visit to my "happy place," Southern Exposure Herb Farm, where several times a year a group of friends and I go to make lovely home decor projects, enjoy a beautiful dinner and walk through their wonderful gardens.
We recently enjoyed our first early autumn visit, making a fall botanical wreath. More on that later but first, a walk through the gardens. Their zinnias were fabulous!
Even the buds have their own exquisite details.
I don't know what these are, but I loved them!
Pretty much everywhere you walk, you'll find statues in unique places.
And sometimes, if the dill is good, the statues, such as this madonna, become completely hidden!
They hydrangeas were enormous.
This one bloom was almost as long as my forearm from the tip of fingertips to almost my elbow!
At Southern Exposure you'll find rock sculptures in front of some of the 1800s farm buildings. I love how they add another sense of texture to the land.
The veggie gardens were looking splendid.
And the herb garden was still providing wonderful fragrances.
Apples anyone?
It was so tempting not to reach right up and grab one!
There were some beautiful color combinations -- the colors of fall.
And this red and white was pretty stunning too.
I don't know what these were -- but I loved them!
And, hanging in an arbor near the milking parlor where we dine, some beautiful grapes.
This photo is just for Sheri from Red Rose Alley -- roses are her favorite! Maybe they're yours, too!
Angie started us out with a sangria cocktail that was yummy.
We ended up at a table with four other women from our area and laughed all through dinner and our project. We swapped photographer roles to get a photo of us with our travel pals we came with -- in my case, Kate and Jan.
Then it was on to the craft tent where our supplies were laid out before us.
And voila! The finished product -- a beautiful wreath, just perfect for welcoming in the fall season!
I was very sad to leave...
...but will be back soon for my next one!
That really is a beautiful place, so many wonderful flowers and fruits and trees to see. I love all the flower close-ups. You are lucky to be able to go there and meet with friends and be creative. Enjoy your weekend, hugs, Valerie

ReplyDeleteBEAUTIFUL, the last of the summer blooms. That purple plant that you was not sure what it is, it is a Cleome hassleriana. Love that plant. I planted seeds this yr but did not have anything come up cause I lost interest and was not watering when I needed too. Loving your flower pics.

The first visit to this place does help ease the transition into fall, doesn't it? I fear when I open the door summer still will be lurking around, so I'll just enjoy your photos a bit longer!
ReplyDeleteAh, Jeanie, Southern Exposure is such a lovely place to visit. The blooms are marvelous. The one that you didn't know what it was is - Cleome. I used to grow it when we lived in VA. It is great in the garden, as you saw. The colors in their garden are marvelous. I know you had a great time.

ReplyDeleteGod bless.
The beautiful flower you didn't know the name of is called a Cleome or spider flower. My parents grow lots of them, along with zinnias, in their garden. They have a wonderful fragrance, too.
ReplyDeleteLovely! Your happy place is my happy place, virtually! Love the grounds this visit, and your project.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome place. So love the color combinations of those zinnias. Janice

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful day you had with your friends in such a stunning environment. The gardens are gorgeous - I think autumn gardens can be absolutely beautiful, and your pictures prove that. It's lovely to go out with friends and do some creative projects together - if it's accompanied by a sangria cocktail even better!!! Thank you for sharing this lovely day with us.

So beautiful! I especially love that first shot. :)
ReplyDeleteI love zinnies and Southern Exposure.
ReplyDeleteLooks wondrous.
I look forward to your Southern Exposure visits. It's so beautiful in every season. I'm excited to know what your menu was. Sangria was a good start! Love the colorful wreath. I wore one of your scarves this week and thought of you.
ReplyDeleteI would be sad to leave Southern Exposure too. Their gardens are just gorgeous! I loved seeing it all. Then your time chatting and laughing with others and making Autumn wreaths is just wonderful. Lovely indeed!
ReplyDeleteSuch fun and joy, for you & friends, jeanie!!! I have to say, that bud is most remarkable!!!! Isn't it great, returning to places we so love!!! For me, it was the Common Ground Country Fair, just this weekend. The COLORS of this season, expressed so beautifully in plants!!
ReplyDeleteEvery time you post about Southern Exposure I am reminded to look up the classes.
ReplyDeleteIt does look fun!
Oh, I love these photos, especially the one with the bud!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest - I love Autumn, it's my favorite season (I think I've mentioned it before). Alle these colors surrounding me make me feel much better :)
What a beautiful place! The gardens are so inspiring with all the fall colors. Your wreath turned out wonderful! Such a nice place to spend the day with friends. Hugs xo Karen
ReplyDeleteSounds like a wonderful time there, as always! :)
ReplyDeleteRoses are my favourite flower too. I've always loved yellow roses, even though my favourite colour is purple, and my favourite scent is lavender (though rose is a close second in the scent thing).
The zinnias are beautiful! I love the picture with the butterfly. Your wreath looks great, too. I haven't put any fall wreaths up yet since it's still so hot here, but you're making me re-think that.
ReplyDeleteSuch a cool oasis for you! Your wreath turned out beautifully!!!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful wreath made in the most beautiful surroundings!
ReplyDeleteLoved all the photos Jeanie, what a wonderful place to visit.
It looks like Autumn has arrived at Southern Exposure. And how lovely it looks, Jeanie. I am wondering if the bruised looking fruit is persimmons? The apples looked bruised too, hmmmm. That sweet little angel looks so precious by the orange flowers. And a variety of Zinnia colors. I do wish they would clear the brush and weeds around the Mary statue. I always enjoy my visits with you at Southern Exposure, Jeanie. Nature has been calling me. : )

ps.....Oh, and thank you for the rose picture! It is beautiful. Not sure if I ever mentioned to you before, but PINK roses are my second favorite. They look so pretty adorning that fountain. : )
ReplyDeleteOooo... I was wondering when your first visit would be! That pic at the top says sooo much--summer's last song--love that one! I LOVE zinnias. The pink flowers you wondered about, are, I think cleome. It attracts bee, butterflies and birds, making it a great pollinator plant! SE is just sooo beautiful... *sigh* ... And just LOVE the wreath you made to take home! Already looking forward to your next adventure there, Jeanie! ;) ((HUGS))
