Paris In July: A Black and White City

Paris may be a city of lights with glorious color in any number of places. But Paris in black and white can enthrall. Here are some of my favorite "conversions."

Cafe on the Champs Elysses

Bouquinistes on the bans of the Seine

Le Bon Marche Wine Cellar

Flowers at Rue Cler

On the Seine

Stairwell at Musee Jacquemart Andre

Parisian Courtyard

Left Bank Window

Paris Opera (Garnier)

Paris Opera (Garnier)
Marais Rooftops

A View I will Forever Remember

Le Tour Eiffel

Medici Fountain, Jardin du Luxembourg

The End of the Day -- Or Anytime!

Thanks to Tamara for hosting Paris in July.

I also want to add a link to a New York Times article on Notre Dame. It's just fascinating and you can see it HERE.

You can see more Paris and French-related themes here at her blog, featuring books, film, travel, food and more!

  1. Wow! Those remind me of the classic photographs of Paris in the first half of the 20th century. There’s so much design in every little detail of almost all pre-War Paris buildings. (The sixties were a train wreck for architecture!)

thanks for the beautiful images.... mae at maefood.blogspot.com

  4. I took a class on developing film back when camera had film and came to love black and white photography. Your photos are wonderful. My favorite is the Marais Rooftops. A classic for those of us who love lines, contrast and balance in our black and whites.

  8. I am sure that I am a Philistine but black-and-white photography leaves me cold. There is no doubt a whole degree of artistic interpretation that escapes my untutored eye, but a yellow banana, red cherries and a strawberry shake all look better in colour. And as for birds....well, let me not even go there!

  10. Beautiful!

But I can't help feeling the black & white has robbed me. What do they look like in color? :)

  19. These turned out stunning in black and white. Most impressive when desaturated. In fact it makes Paris look vintage. Great choice for this week's challenge.

  20. It´s really interesting how regular things turn into wonderful art this way! The coutyard and the Bank Window are my favorite, but they´re all beautiful and kinda seem to come from a different timeline.

  26. Wonderful! Black and white add something dramatic to pictures of such scenes. I think my favourite is the courtyard, mainly because it is the simplest.

  27. Oh my goodness... these are PERFECT! And making me miss it so! What a lovely idea. It's been sooo long since I've been in Paris in July. We usually have people renting in June and July and winter is the easiest time for my sweetie to get away. But you have made it easy to visit! Thanks for this! Xoxo

  31. O Paris was in classy black and white when the Nouvelle Vague filmmakers appeared in the cultural scene. Your photos remind me of the films of these New Wave directors, "Breathless", "400 Blows", and yes, my fave, Agnes Varda's "Cleo from 5 to 7". :)
