Birds of the Berkshires

I know that if you live in the north, you never want to see snow again -- or at least not for rather awhile!

But indulge me with a look at some birds I saw while we were in the Berkshires back in March.

All of these were on the deck or yard of Rick's brother and his wife and all pretty standard ones.

I love the cardinals, male and female.

It appeared that this must be quite a hot spot for these beautiful birds. Once I looked out and counted eight bright red ones and knew the paler females weren't far behind. Alas. I could only get two in this photo!

The scene stealers were the wild turkeys.

Many of them hung around under the deck where I'm sure they were devouring more than a little of the seed dropped down from the birds above.

But the more aggressive of the flock came right to the feeder!

At one point three turkeys were vying for the best seed!

When they were out in the field and in the distance, they looked liked rocks!

"The rocks are moving!"

These fellows seemed to hang around together, rather like they were having a good chat!

Of course there were chickadees.

And this fellow!

I'm glad he was pecking on the seeds and not wood on the house!

I'm not quite sure who this guy is! Any ideas? Is he the woodpecker above?

On a cold snowy day when you'd rather be inside than out, this is surely the place to be.

Thanks for indulging me in a little winter birdwatching. Now I'm waiting for the goldfinch to return to my feeder!

  2. Hi Jeanie: Your mystery bird is a Red-bellied Woodpecker, a male actually. What a great backyard Rick's brother has. Wild Turkeys have certainly habituated well to humans and it is not unusual here for us to see them walking down suburban streets. I am not quite sure whether you know, but years ago there was an exchange between Ontario and Michigan, moose from Ontario for Wild Turkeys from Michigan. I hope the moose recovery in the Upper Peninsula has been as successful as the turkey reintroduction here.

  3. Wow, what beautiful birds, especially the light red one against the white snow!
Funny enough, with the weather having warmed up (for today, forecast cold(er) again) I nearly (... ;-)...) enjoy seeing snow.
I think not evven in the zoo I´ve seen a life turkey. Only know them in slices, not even like a whole to cook.

  5. You surely must know how much I love cardinals and how much I miss them from my landscape here. They were EVERYWHERE in the town I lived before. In fact, the mascot was the cardinal and the football, wrestling, and basketball teams were Cardinals, too.

Your photos are all wonderful, but I wouldn't want to be anywhere near those wild turkeys. You got some fabulous shots, indeed.

  10. Looks familiar! My parents get flocks of wild turkey in their backyard. They are fun to watch. It is common around there to have to stop for turkeys to cross the road. Cardinals are so beautiful. We enjoy watching the couples together and how they interact and communicate. We see just as many cardinals in SC which I was not expecting!

  12. That was a big crop of wild turkeys! Can't imagine finding a couple of them at my bird feeder!

I second the vote on your mystery bird being a Red-Bellied Woodpecker. I see a lot of them with the washed out belly coloring like that.

  15. The cardinals always look fabulous against the white background. You captured some nice shots. I can’t believe those turkeys getting up there and eating from the bird feeders! We get them here too but all they get is fallen seed from the feeders since we built ours to not be accessible. I do however have them jump up on my bird bath and they look pretty silly!

  16. OH MY GOSH, EIGHT RED CARDINALS! What a sight that must have been. They are so beautiful. And I think I've told you that it is a dream of mine to see the red cardinal someday. They are so pretty against the white snow. Now, the turkeys on the other hand, we see them all the time, and they even come into the neighborhoods. Yes, they seem to come in families. When people put the feeders out, I can imagine what different birds come around. Those Woodpeckers are funny fellows, aren't they? What a wonderful post, Jeanie. Thank you for sharing your bird photos. : )

  17. Beautiful photos. I love the red cardinals. They don't usually come in my region of Eastern Quebec. However, last Fall, I had one at my feeder.

  18. Great post! I love seeing birds - outside. The cardinals is so pretty. I don't think they live here in Japan. The turkeys are entertaining!

  21. I laughed out loud at the turkeys at the feeder,Jeanie!! That is really something. I love, love birds and you have captured them beautifully! I see you have a male red bellied woodpecker and a male downy woodpecker. We get them here particularly at the suet feeder. Have a great evening!

    And the turkeys . . . quite a bunch . . .

    Wonderful pictures Jeanie!

  24. Amazing photos, Jeanie. I've never seen such colorful birds. Ours are much more muted in color but we do have some stunning butterflies (that I've not managed to catch with my camera) out and about just now.

  25. Oh, this was sooo delightful, Jeanie! Cardinals against a backdrop of pure, white snow...magical! It was a real joy to see all these feathered friends from back home. We don't have most of these birds here in Norway (many in my native Pennsylvania, though!), so I miss seeing them sometimes... the cardinals especially--that red of the male is so special!Fun to see the turkeys up close! I've not had much chance to photograph birds, and we have few in our area, more in wooded areas though. We try to attract more birds, bees and insects to our garden with plants/feeding, so more do come... the camera on my phone is so slow though, I never get any good bird pics... LOL! ((HUGS))

  26. There's nothing prettier than a red cardinal on a snowy day. They just pop in the landscape. That first pic of the turkeys all fluffed up and with their tail feathers spread out is great. Your downy woodpecker at the suet is a cutie, too. We used to get those when we lived at Dad's and the hairy woodpeckers, too. Birdwatching is so much fun.

  27. Awesome snaps of the red male cardinals with the snow for a backdrop, they are simply beautiful. The turkeys are show worthy as well. We have a lot of cardinals and driving on scenic roads see wild turkeys. A beautiful scene of nature! Great post Jeanie........

  28. I will see wild turkeys very occasionally -- almost rarely -- but never in my wildest imagination did I conceive of them coming to feeders. That really is amazing, and a sight I would have loved to see in person. My daddy cardinal is coming regularly for peanuts and seed now. My hope is that when the young ones have fledged, they'll show up, too.

  30. WoW! Beautiful creatures, for sure - but I'm absolutely gobsmacked by your photography skills! You always have terrific photos, but these are really marvelous! I'm so jealous - I can't even get decent shots of my art work and have to pay a photographer for "real" photos...which means not everything gets photographed, needless to say LOL.
What a wonderful bird spying walk - and it looks like several people have given you your mystery bird answer! I love it when that happens!
Enjoy your day - hope Rick is further along on the mend!

  31. ugh. Snow. We are getting some slushy snow this weekend. Le sigh. Hopefully the worst of the storm stays south of us as we are driving to my parents tomorrow morning. I'm SO OVER WINTER!! WHY DO WE LIVE HERE?

End rant. ;) Thanks for the pretty bird pictures. The cardinals look especially beautiful against the white snow. Cardinals are definitely my favorite!!

  34. It's really nice to see all the birds. You got some super photos. I get an occasional cardinal at my house. they are around but it is a bit too wooded for them. And got to love the turkeys. They seem like such big birds for the bird feeders but that never stops them. Unfortunately right now I still can't find either of my feeders as the bear ran off with them. I have an old beat up one I am going to put out until I find one I like. But luckily the ones missing were old and nothing special either, but one of them I did really like. Maybe I should put my boots on and go through the wet woods for a search before they thicken up with growth. Happy weekend. Hugs-Erika

  35. How I would love seeing all of these birds, but the red cardinals would have me swooning. They are just gorgeous. Then those turkeys are something else too. They are beautiful and I am thinking Thanksgiving.

  36. Like you I love cardinals as well, both male and female. Unfortunately we don't have them here - but we do have wild turkeys. Quite often they parade down the street where I live and I'm just happy that they don't get into my garden as they can be very messy. Sometimes they hang out on the roofs of the houses in the neighborhood - they're quite a sight actually.

  37. Those turkeys look a bit big for the bird feeder, but that makes is both a great picture and a funny one. Love your pictures, the birds are beautiful.

  38. Hi Jeanie, this is an awesome birdie post. Gorgeous captures of the Cardinals, turkeys and the Woodpeckers. It was neat seeing all those turkeys. I would not want to feed them, I am sure they eat a lot. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend. PS, thanks also for leaving a comment for me.

  41. Cardinals are such beautifulmbirds, wish I could say the same about turkeys. We have resident turkeys that we see almost daily, it seems they love to be out and about while it is raining.
