A look back to last month. On the 19th of January, winter came to Lansing, MI, with some snow. Not our usual deep January snow, but snow. And cold. The day before, a small group of us headed to one of my favorite spots, Chelsea, Michigan, which I've shown here and here in the past.
Our ultimate destination was the Jiffy Mix factory tour, but we started out with lunch at Common Grill and Barb and I split a dessert sundae with carmelized popcorn, sugared nuts and salted caramel ice cream. It looks big. You should have seen it before the server split it in two. (Actually, we didn't see it either, but you can imagine!)
Then a little shopping. I have decided that Lizzie is going to give me one of these for Cat-Mother's day. Aren't they cheerful, whizzing around in the breeze? I think it will go at the lake.
I might have to cave and get one for home, too!
Loads of lovely shops in Chelsea. We needed more time.
Even the alleyways of this small town are charming. So is one of my favorite used book stores.
Then on to the tour! I learned the company had been in business for four generations, corn muffins are their best seller, much of the wheat for the flour is grown regionally here in Michigan and they produce 1.5 million boxes a day of product for international distribution, along with larger sizes for institutional use.
Here we are, the Fearsome Fivesome. Rest assured, should you buy a Jiffy Mix, you won't find our hair in it! Even the beards were covered! (For an earlier and more detailed post on the Jiffy Tour, you can go HERE)
The it was off to another fun spot -- USArtQuest. Don't you think Rick needs a sculpture like this on his walls? I do.
Loads of paper, art supplies for collage and assemblage (mostly) and anything to do with paper.
Home sweet home after and the new season of "Grace and Frankie." Cold winter days have their charms!

I don't think I've ever been the Chelsea. I'm putting it on list of places to go next summer. Looks like fun. Yes, you need to make Rick a bike sculpture. Very easy and cool.
Jeanie, you take the best little excursions! Chelsea looks so charming! I would enjoy a tour of Jiffy Mix, you know we love our cornbread in the South. But, I always make mine from scratch!
Chelsea looks like a wonderful place to visit with lots of pretty things to see The visit to the Jiffy factory must have been very interesting, I love doing things like that. Glad you had such a good day out. Hugs, Valerie
Jiffy corn muffin mix was part of my childhood! I haven't thought of it in years, but as a child, I ate it with chili, with soup, with so many things. The sundae looks wonderful.
That sundae gives a whole new meaning to the term "supersize!" I am sure that we will now find you jogging, snowshoing, skating, skiing, and running behind Rick's bike to burn off those surplus calories! And only lettuce for lunch for a week!
That bike sculpture is awesome! It's simple and it looks interesting I think :)
I might add this to my list of places I want to see! I have some friends that would enjoy this and Michigan is not too far away. I love those wind mills! How pretty and unique!
I sure do love that deco very, very much!! Especially for winter, brightens up the day!
I like factory tours. We see people there actually working and producing things.
The picture with the paper supply is lovely!
Wow, what an EXCELLENT day. Paper stores, ice cream sundaes that look like pieces of art-and probably taste divine, and a tour. I didn't know that was where Jiffy Mix was from. And I am with you. I would want on of those cool spinners. Love the colors. Are they made using some plastic Easter eggs? Happy weekend. Hugs-Erika
Fun outing..the cap would have lost me LOL..
Have a good day!!
I definitely have to put Chelea on my destination list.
Needless to say, I totally share your love of Chelsea! My only regret when you and I took the tour was the ban on photos inside the fascinating, humming factory floor. Common Grill has been a favorite place for us ever since the location was changed from being a hardware store. Though it was a wonderful old-time hardware store where they would loan you gas cans so you could prime your furnace when you ran out of heating oil -- I know that from stupid experience!

I didn’t realize that Jiffy was headquartered in Chelsea. I knew about the Purple Rose Theatre and Jeff Daniels are in Chelsea but that’s it! Well now there’s another reason to go there! I like that name- that’s my daughter’s name too! We took a tour of the “Hershey’s” factory in Hershey, PA which turned out to be a simulated tour that you sit on a ride and are talken through. It was cute for the kids it hardly a real tour.
By now you know I love to shop so I need to put Chelsea on my list of places to visit!
I grew up in Hell, Michigan and went to school in Pinckney. We always too a school trip to the Jiffy Mix factory and left with a free cake mix box. I still buy the Jiffy Mix corn bread. My dad had his architect office in Chelsea as well. Small world!
Loved Grace and Frankie. I think I have seen them all now.
The paper store and other gifts shops are most wonderful. Yes, Rick needs that sculpture/wall and you need the whirly things for the lake and your home. What fun to also tour Jiffy too. Now this just looks like a wonderful adventure with friends.
Hello,
Your visit to Chelsea looks like a fun time. That sundae looks yummy. The tour photo from the Jiffy factory is cute. My hubby loves cornbread. I like the pretty and colorful twirly thingies/spinners? Fun photos! Enjoy your day and happy weekend!
How thoughtful of Lizzie to buy you those twirly spinners! ;) That is a fun gift! They will be pretty spinning around in the wind. I say get some for home, too. We need pops of color, especially living in the northern regions when it can be pretty brown much of the year!
This looks like such a delightful little town! And that sundae looks amazing!!
What an interesting tour. I have used Jiffy cake mix but not the corn muffin mix. I love the is size, small so a small cake :) It's nice to know companies are really going the extra mile for sanitary too. I hope they all do this. Love all the nice gift shops. I think Miss Lizzie chose a great gift for you, hope you got two so you can enjoy one at home and one at the lake. Me, I fell hard for the little girl and boy reading on the bench. That would have come home with me!!!! We don't have to deal with cold and any snow but next week we are expecting flooding rain. Ugh..........Have a nice weekend.
It sure looks like a great place to visit!!! And looks like you had a great time!!
Thanks so much for stopping by and for taking the time to comment!!
Hugs,
Debbie
Fun! I love browsing around cute shops! The Jiffy tour looks fun!
I was disappointed in the new season of G and F. They say the F word way too much and it was a little boring. Oh well.
I need to get back to Chelsea the next time I am in MI!
Love those sculptures, hope you get them for Cat Mother's day :)
The bike wheels sculpture is great too.
Nice tour of the Jiffy Mix factory.
Will have to go and watch the new season of Gracie and Frankie, didn't know it was back on.
Colourful shots, Jeanie!
It all looks wonderful, but you could never have gotten me out of that paper store!!
Jeanie, I would have thoroughly enjoyed this excursion. All the shops look so interesting. You most likely would have not been able to retrieve me from the used book store, I love them. Have used Jiffy muffin mix for more years than I care to remember. Always so good. Now if I could just have some of your dessert.
Happy weekend to you!
Jeanie,
Such a cool excursion and I will think of you every time I make a batch of Jiffy Mix Muffins!
So nice to see such a can-do, exuberant group of gals with glorious smiles too!
XO
Jemma
How fun! It's so nice to see industry still thriving in the US, and I love those little art swirly things. Definitely get one for the lake house!
Well, it certainly looks like you had some fun. Love that I won't find any of your hair---or beard hair---in my Jiffy corn bread mix. lol
Have a wonderful weekend, Jeanie! xo Diana
Looks like a fun outing.
Love the springy looking ball sculpture thingies!
Lizzie would love, for sure!
Chelsea sounds like I need a visit there!
The Jiffy tour sounds interesting.
I love exploring small towns and this one looks so fun. The tour looks great. Wow!!--what in the world ARE THOSE bright fun whirly twirly gadgets??>---love those! i love whimsical stuff like that. Do y'all have any fun weekend plans?
I don’t think I’ve ever had a corn muffin. We saved the bike sculpture pic as Ace is doing art. Glad you had a nice day!
Cath
What a fun tour! I would also love to tour that town, love doing that. Great post and great photographs! Cute ladies with the nets on...lol!
Admittedly, I have not used any Jiffy mix product in several years, but I would enjoy the factory tour and even better the trip to Chelsea which looked like a fun outing!
Jeanie, looks like a fun tour and some great shopping. It was a short season for Grace and Frankie! We watched it all in one sitting..Happy Snow Day (here anyway)..Judy
Jeanie, this looks a wonderful day. A fun tour and some shopping, a great mix.
All the best Jan
WOW... the Jiffy Mix factory!! I didn't know it was in MI! I grew up with Mom making Jiffy cornbread and other goodies. :) Their production level is incredible. Oh, my... that is some dessert--a sundae with popcorn! USArtQuest looks like fun and beautiful creative finds... What a great day out to lift winter! :) Thanks for taking up along, Jeanie! ((HUGS))
Cute, cute. The sundae looks delicious. I love Jiffy Cornbread Mix.
