Actually, he's been back for awhile. My first sighting was earlier this month. However, every time I had my camera with me, he was elsewhere. But a small detour on the way home from the dentist brought a sighting. I had the camera with me so I quickly parked and tried to follow him up and down the ditch. I almost missed him!
He was far from the footbridge and blended quite well with the environment.
I love a zoom!
He posed rather dutifully for awhile...
...and then he took off!
I never am ready when he starts to fly -- between digital delay and sometimes not having the camera on when he goes, I usually miss it. And he often goes the other direction! (Check out that wingspan!)
But today he was on sport-shoot and I followed him along! (Fuzzy pix -- it's hard to hit a moving target!)
I wasn't quite sure of his path, but hey, no complaints!
When Harry returns, it means spring really is here...
...no matter how brisk it is!

Jeanie, I know how anxiously you watch a wait for Harry’s return every year and I’m so glad he’s back! I’m sure it makes spring official for you because he wouldn’t be coming if he knew cold would be around for any length of time. ReplyDeleteHarry is a great name for him. There is a little pond on one of the back roads I travel. I often see a blue heron there, but usually he is already flying. There are lots of weeds and broken trees around the pond. He blends in too well. Nice actions shots!

HARRY!!!!!! Welcome back, man! You give us hope that spring is not just a myth up here in the midwest, but that we CAN have a spring! Oh Jeanie, you must have been delighted to see him! We too have our resident creatures that when they come back, we jump for joy like kids. "Mrs. Robinson" the robin is back, flitting about from bush to bush in our garden, plotting her next real estate purchase to set up housekeeping. The flap of wings and blurrrrrr of wings in the air is invigorating. Keep on snapping those photos!

ReplyDeleteEvery spring the blue herons nest in the trees in our area. The choose trees about 60 to 100 feet tall and those baby squawk all day (and night) long. We have one of the tall trees on our lane and are so glad that the herons seems to prefer a tree 3 lanes over. It's a very loud metallic sound and it's bad enough from a distance. I can't imagine what it would do to your ears if it was so close.
