A Trip to the Greens Market!

For the past I-don't-know-how-many years, my friend Jan and I have made the trip to the Northville Greens Market, the weekend before Thanksgiving, our official start to the holiday season. So, join me and the elves for a day in Northville!

Northville is a charming town about an hour from us and among its charms are our favorite store, Gardenviews, a delightful Walt-Disney-like feel and a nearby Trader Joe's. We always wrap our visit with a visit to Guernsey's, a restaurant with broasted chicken to die for.

We have experienced the Greens Market in a number of meteorological conditions -- sunny days, brisk but dry, subzero temps and windy. But we have never been there in a deluge.

Normally, I would share photos with you like this:

Or this:

But today it was just pouring rain, grab-and-go. So grab we did and then we headed for shelter at Gardenviews, which was a Christmas wonderland.

And it was a wonderland, filled with lots of pretty trees...

...tempting ornaments...

...adorable little glittery houses...

...and snowy branches of loveliness.

There were vintage Kris Kringles...

...and slightly more traditional Santas...

...and the right jolly old elf himself.

But most of all, it was warm, cheerful and dry!

And despite the rain (and later snow) it was glorious fun.

And a wonderful start to the holidays!

Looks lovely Jeanie. Sorry the weather was so bad but we are having similar weather here. In fact, the main highway to the north has been blocked in both directions due to mudslides caused by heavy downpours the past two days. But I was so glad to see the rain stop and the sky show a bit of sunshine and some blue. I'm sure you enjoyed the Christmas market. I find they always put one in the mood. I'm hoping to go to one this weekend but it will be nothing like the one you've gone to. I've never been to it before but the proceeds will help impoverished women who are struggling. I don't really need anything now as my shopping is done but you never know what unique items you find. Enjoy the rest of your week. xx

My keyboard is still not working. Stopped by to let you know I was here and to wish you a beautiful Thursday, happy Thanksgiving, and wonderful Friday. The photos are awesome, but everything looked so cold. I was shivering when I finished these awesome photos, especially the first few. BRRR

Hello Jeanie, sorry that the weather did not cooperate with your visit. The Christmas decorations are all beautiful. I like the wreaths and the cute elfves.
There are some restaurants near me that have delicious broasted chicken, we love it. Happy Friday, enjoy your weekend!

Love, love all the reds, greens, sparkles, snowy, gliztenings, Santa looks . . .
So much better than the deluge . . .
This time of the year, weather can not be predictable . . .
And snow you said . . . all we’ve had are flakes!
I am waiting and patient . . .
Looking forward to seeing your Christmas decorating . . .
A treat indeed!

That just put me in a Christmasy mood! There's always more decorations to want. We usually add another hand blown glass ornament every year (kind of like the snowmen you showed). Because we are going away this Christmas, I won't be decorating like I normally do, but I love seeing what other people are doing. Did you buy anything? -Jenn

Looks like a delightful place to kick off the holiday season! I am completely enchanted with those corrugated cardboard Putz houses ... I have a large collection of both vintage and new Putz houses - but not a corrugated cardboard one! I will have to search one out to add this year - or maybe create one!

Thanks for sharing your day trip!

It's a little early for me to get too excited about Christmas, but I must say that this all looks very charming, Jeanie. Lovely!

It's so fun to get out and experience the first full flush of Christmas decor. Eeven the weather can't diminish the feeling (except for the driving). Hope you enjoyed the day in spite of the weather.

What a beautiful way to shop! It's tempting me to get out today but I probably won't. There are so many more shops that I love here in the mts. Enjoy your weekend!

Texas has barbeque and chicken-fried steak, but Texans don't know broasted chicken! There was a little lunch counter we used to stop at after junior high classes let out, and their broasted chicken was the best. The hardest decision I had to make right after Mom's burial in our hometown cemetery was: broasted chicken, or Maid-Rites? We all decided to go with the Maid-Rites, but I still think about that chicken from time to time!

Fabulous Christmas photos. Gets me all excited for decorating-tomorrow. I would have been spending way too much money on some of those vintage looking ornaments. But Northville is a very cute town and it looks like a great day out. Your envelope from me went out in the mail today too- just so you know. Happy weekend. Hugs-Erika

It is so fun to kick off the Christmas season with something like this. How very special, even in the rain. I loved seeing all the color and seasonal goodies.

That is a bummer that the weather didn't cooperate. Pouring rain is pretty much my least favorite weather condition when I am out exploring. It's worse than snow, IMO! I am glad you still had a wonderful day, though! What a fun tradition to kick off the holiday season!

Jeanie there is so much inspiration here, who cares if it was raining outside. The cozy atmosphere indoors more than makes up for it.

Jeanie, this looks so much fun albeit a little damp. I love all the Christmas decorations.

As much as I love the rain, I'm not fond of shopping in it. Ha
I do love visiting all the Christmas stores...hoping to do a little of that next week.

You must have visited the greens market on Saturday. It was pouring down rain that day in Westland! I was going to go out shopping but instead chose to stay inside, warm and dry.

If you come out this way again, I would love to meet you. We can share cat stories, craft stories, etc. I've got a fat cat, Barney, who looks like Garfield. I also have Boy, a black cat whom my husband calls Bad Boy because he always got in trouble when he was a kitten. His real name was Prince Charming. Go figure how things turn out. LOL!

Those elves are sure cute little fellows. This place is right up my alley. ; ) So many wonderful goodies to look at. I love that Santa ornament, he's so jolly. I appreciate white and silver at Christmas, but I've gotta have my RED!! Oh, I love rainy days, Jeanie. What a fun day you had!

Let the Christmas season begin!

Hi Jeanie, bad luck with the weather for such a special event but wow the gorgeous Christmas decorations. Inside made up for it! Oh my, I would have needed my a cart to get out of there with all the inspiration I am seeing. Bet it was a great way to spen a rainy morning. Busy here with a wonderful Thanksgiving with family home. Hope you are feeling better and have a good week my friend.........hugs.

I am sorry the weather was so bad, the folks who run the market must have been disappointed too. I am noticing so many beautiful and unusual Christmas ornaments around this year. I have sent a couple that represent "England" as gifts to friends abroad. They're not specifically Christmassy so I am figuring they can be used as ornaments at other times of year too. I wondered what "broasted" chicken is, is that a slip of the keyboard or an actual way of cooking chicken? :)

Jeanie, I love rain, so I would've had a great time! I have never been to Northville. I'll be looking it up on the map now. Enjoy your last weeks of autumn.
