Martha's Vineyard: Island Alpaca

It was Wednesday now, and Rick's work would be finished at four. So I decided to take off and see more of the island. To be honest, I got lost trying to find Island Alpaca, but after lunch (and better directions!) I got there.

This is an alpaca farm. They also do their own yarns and have a shop with both their own (and other) merchandise. (Yes, I did. Pink alpaca for a scarf and a couple of Christmas gifts, one of which I'm considering keeping because I love it so much!)

I loved these sweet faced animals. You could see them in the barns...

...or out in their pens outdoors where a guide explained a bit about the animals.

I was particularly fond of the white ones.

After that, I picked up Rick and we went to Vineyard Haven. We'd planned to do a bit of shopping there but it was so crowded that we ended up at a beach on the Edgartown end of Main Street.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't Vineyard Haven's best beach. It was very small and the sand wasn't the best. But it was fine for a walk and boat watching.

And to catch a glimpse or two of a gull!

Then it was to Oak Bluffs again. We were drawn back here like moths to a flame.

There was nothing about this little town I didn't adore! (Well, almost nothing)

Our plan was a little shopping and dinner. The shopping was fine. The dinner -- not so much.

Let's just say that if you are on Martha's Vineyard and considering a stop at a restaurant called Beetlebung, check out my trip advisor review first. Very disappointing. Maybe it was a bad night for them. Or maybe we were overly tired and hungry. Either way...we won't be back.

That was the one thing about Oak Bluffs I did not adore!

But then it was an early night because we had big plans for the next day! An early morning ferry to Nantucket!

  2. That alpaca farm sounds so cool! I definitely would have picked up some yarn - especially since we are moving into knitting season! That's too bad that you had a disappointing dinner, though!

  3. Those houses are dripping with old authentic charm:)
I love that you got to walk and walk through around
in the island quiet. I imagine it would be a wonder
    in the Wintertime.

  7. I am in LOVE with the photos you took of the alpaca. They have such innocent and sweet faces. You have captured that beauty and innocence so well.

Too bad about the food, and maybe an inferior beach, but those adorable alpaca and the rest of the day surely (and hopefully) made up for it.

  8. Jeanie, I've loved reading
all of your MV posts! It's
on my bucket list : )

    Forget about Obama watch,
I'd be on the lookout for author
    and illustrator Susan Branch,
one of my heroes! Oh, I do
    admire her so.....She wrote
    about the Grand Illumination
in one of her sweet memoirs.
How lucky that you got to see
    and experience it!

You are living the dream! (Mine,
    ha ha!!)

  9. So glad you shared these neat animals, they sure are interesting aren't they? And their sweet lil FACES!!-- oh my! You just want to hug 'em. Did you touch any of them and what do they feel like? the fur looks so soft, and it will be so neat for your projects. I loved the Grand Illumination post....you did a great job with that. Loved the pretty pictures. I'd only learned of it a few years back I guess it was, and I love to look at pictures. those lanterns and balloons and all are just so pretty! I'm so glad you got to go....and thank you for sharing it with us. Did you have a favorite house? I did love the way those folks put the lights underneath the pretty japanese parasols, that was cool. What a WONDERFUL AND SCENIC TRIP!!

  10. Those alpacas are very cute. Sounds like you had a great adventure. When I was last in Oak Bluff's, about 20 years ago, it was very late fall and everything was shut down. Rather bland. But it looks wonderful now. In 20 years I bet it has changed and spruced up a lot. I want to go back now. Happy day. Hugs-Erika

  11. Jeanie, yes, the alpaca is such a sweet faced and beautiful animal! I think they have to be sweet with those faces! Sounds like you had a wonderful last day on the island, sorry about your dinner. Always disappointing to have a bad experience at a restaurant. I enjoyed the tour here, each and ever photo, thanks for sharing your trip.

  12. Did you get to pet the alpacas?

I'm sorry your dinner was disappointing, but glad you enjoyed the rest of the day.

  13. I think the alpacas are wonderful. And, if memory serves, they're a little more sweet-tempered than llamas. I'm just sure I had something made from alpaca in the distant past -- or maybe it was my dad. In any event, I remember it was considered the height of luxury. I haven't thought of that in years.

  20. JEANIE! I finally have internet after not having it for five days! We needed a new modem.

Those alpaca are hilarious!!!!! What a great trip. The architecture of this region is so beautiful. There's no where like the east coast. LOVE!

  22. Hi Jeanie, I'm catching up. Alpacas have such cute faces and I like them very much. Martha's Vineyard is a lovely place. It's almost twenty years ago that I spent one day there. What a shame that you didn't enjoy your dinner.
