Rick and I spent a couple of days in the metro Detroit area helping Kevin and Molly move to their first house. They own it fair and square -- apart from the lion's share of it which the loan company has, but details, details! It's theirs to settle in and have a real home.

Yes, I know -- this is a place is I should not go. But really, how could I pass up tons of books? Or these terrific travel pamphlets. I've always loved these and am getting quite a collection on all things Brit. Now there is a Mont St. Michel booklet to start France off!
My shelf is bulging. Well, actually, one of my wicker chairs, till I can figure out where they will all go! I couldn't resist the memoirs.
These two food memoirs/biographies were especially good finds for me -- Ruth Reichl's "Tender at the Bone" and the bio of Judith Jones, Julia's "Mastering the Art" editor.
These two looked fun -- more Britain and Judith Viorst on aging? Sounds good for grins!
And I loved this one -- it's huge with yellowed pages. And I'll never read it. But the illustrations at the top of this post are from this book and you can bet you may be seeing it in "altered" form as parts of various
future collages!
It was a good thing Rick finished his e-mail check when he did or who knows what would come home. But it was $11.50 well spent. (Oh, and there was also a book on Versailles and one on the Titanic!) Meanwhile, it's going to be a good-book summer!

I've read almost all the bios...good choices! The illustrations from the van Loon book look very intriguing.

I made a committment to myself when I bought my 2nd Kindle...no more traditional books. Only e books. I think I've bought one traditional book in the past 5 years, and that's only because it wasn't available in kindle format. But I can understand the lure. ;)

Books are as addictive as chocolate, and - just like with chocolate - you can never have enough. At least, I think so, anyway! :)

I find book sales as irresistible as a visit to Pier One. I see a few in your stack that I would like to read.

ReplyDeleteOh my, I know you enjoyed finding your special books to take home. I see some that would have made the cut for me. I would always pick up an extra copy of Brokaw's The Greatest Generation to share. Suddenly Sixty sounds interesting and I love you collection of travel pamphlets. Great addition for beginning your France collection. Now all you need is a quiet corner and cold drink.

Oh booksale! I'd love to run into one. I love picking those books which are old and somewhat forgotten and oftenly ignored. I found some treasures in them. Last time I found 2 books about historical culture of something in particular with my interest and they are most treasured now.

Wow, you got some great books for very little money! That is awesome! The Minneapolis downtown library had a store where they sold used books but they are closing it this week and are having a sale. I walked by it and magically resisted, mostly because it was during work hours and I couldn't be away for long! They were charging $2/bag of books so it was sooo hard to pass up!!

O Jeanie, I thought I'd left a comment here but just checked no, or maybe it didn't go through. I was saying what a wonderful selection you've got! I'd be really interested in the Audrey Hepburn and a few others. Tom Brokaw I've seen the special on TV, and Joan Didion, it's a sad story. Great buys!
ReplyDeleteToo bad we don't live closer. I'd take some of them off your hands when you are finished. I've read all of the memoir ones. I was intrigued by others. I wonder where I can find a good book sale? On the other hand, where will I put more books?
ReplyDeleteFantastic bit of serendipity! I love your finds, and agree that though the shelves may be stuffed, there is always room for "one" more. I can NOT wait to enjoy reading again, and more travel, and the joy of unexpected finds. ReplyDeleteVintage books are one of my great weaknesses but how many old books can I use in collage in this lifetime!!! (there is a list of weaknesses ... seems you and I share a goodly number ;-) )
