Drawing with Joanne and Jill -- Again!

Here are a few more images from my "Drawing with Joanne and Jill" challenge. The first two were done looking at a line drawing of a shape -- in this case, a balloon. It is definitely "from the past."
All the coloring, detail and depth is mine. (We are basically talking a circle connected to a square as a starter.

This one, "Spring is Really Here" also started with a line drawing of a cart as inspiration.
I added the flowers, color and detail.

"Free and Easy" was done from a photo.
Here's the original -- as you can see, I had trouble with the facial coloring! All that natural light and shadow was a challenge.
The background was the challenge for this one. It's for the challenge "Small Pleasures" and I call it "Tara's Swan."
"Tara's Swan" is from this photo of Tara Bradford's swan from the canal behind her Netherlands home. I was fortunate to have a spotting on my last day visiting a year ago.
I felt pretty good about the swan -- less so with the background.

The last time I posted, some of you asked what media I used. These are watercolor pencils. Basically you draw your work, then wet it and blend the colors. It's an easy way to start water color. I am longing for  little more time and space so I can start using "real" watercolors. I've been reading Vivian Swift's blog regularly and in each post she has a painting lesson. That'll have to wait till summer, but it is on the horizon!

  1. These are lovely, Jeannie. I am enjoying your creativity, especially during my leave from the shop.
I wanted to let you know that although I am taking a break from my art table and the more involved posting at the shop, I have gone back to my previous blog, In Stillness and Simplicity. It's simpler and quieter during a very transitional year for our family.
Hope you visit some time. You're on my blogroll there too.

  4. Just finished Le Road Trip (thanks to your recommendation), and these illustrations remind me so much of Ms. Swift's work ... I think this has been a great challenge for you. As always, I love the results!

  5. Beautiful post, again. I particularly like the flower cart. It's hard to do the light and shadow I'm sure, but that is a good try with the cameraman. The swan is nicely done... keep on drawing, Jeanie!

  6. I'm especially fond of the photographer. Every time I see one of those folks with those big (or even huge) lenses, I think about how photographers have to be "in shape", too. They must be heavy.

I've never heard of watercolor pencils. Obviously, I haven't heard of most of the things that are used these days - I left the world of drawing and painting while my "tools" still were nubbins and bits of Crayolas in a cigar box!

  7. I love all of these! You really have captured a lot in your drawings. I think you are a lot better at this than you think you are. The swan McKay be my favorite, but it's very hard to choose because each has personality and charm.

  8. Your sketches are wonderful. The one with the guy I thought looked vintage. Love the swan from Tara's place. The flower cart is definitely a feel of springtime. I have done much art for a long time, but do love watercolor pencils.

  10. I really like your artwork. The fellow with the camera has a lot of feeling in the drawing – he looks more intent than in the photo – and the colors, blue especially, is very good.

Wish that we lived closer... what fun it would be to take a summer class together. I would surely be the class dunce - haha!

  19. They say all writer's have a voice - I think painters must have a view. You've shown the world as you see it and shared yourself in a beautiful way!

Carry on painting, if it’s fun it’s good.

  22. These are beautiful! I'm in awe of your many talents. Drawing, painting, etc. are things I have no talent for whatsoever. I always really admire seeing other's talent in those areas.

  23. Lovely! I have never tried watercolour pencils - are they the ones you have to dip in water to use?
