Junking -- What Caught My Eye

About a week ago, I actually set foot into an antique shop after far too long an absence. Although I didn't come home with anything other than a postcard, these are a few things that caught my eye.

I love packaging -- and this one worked for me!

This blue transferware china could have been an easy sale if there was room in the cupboards!

This little Tyrolean outfit was awfully cute!

Mickey never fails to enchant!

Linens? This green tablecloth would have looked very nice on my table!

And while we are ready to head toward St. Paddy's day, I couldn't resist the cheery face on this Valentine!

As for fun things -- this worked for me. I'm not sure how to use it. But I loved the colors! Do you think it's a calculator?
Here's another fun packaging bit! My mother didn't look like that...

Well, not sure what you thought about the my excursion, but overall I'd give this shop a rating of...
Two things -- First, Jenny at "An English Travel Writer" has a giveaway going on -- and it's fabulous! Even if you don't want to enter, check out her blog if you are into travel! Much to enjoy!

And, there's a new book over at Chopsticks and String called "Madresfield" -- a grand manor house in the tradition of "Downton Abbey" with a long history, one that ties it to Evelyn Waugh and "Brideshead Revisited." Come on over!

  1. Oh,,that's my fave thing to do. We have an awesome shop in my little town called "Yesterdays Treasures". It has room after room of Treasures. I can spend half of a day there. Rosemary and I go to it sometimes when she is visiting. Love all the Goodies that you found! Have a Lovely Week-end!

  2. Hi Jeanie. Fun times and a great window shopping break. I remember my mom wearing straight skirts and sweaters like that when I was very young. I think I have a picture of her and me and she was dress like that. Even her hair was short.

That little red number looks, for all the world, like a very early calculator. Never seen anything like it.

    Have a happy day,
    Annie

  3. Some great finds! My favourite is the happy little valentine, seems to come from a more innocent and sunnier world, (although that's probably just
    an illusion of mine)

The Tyrolean outfit looks like it would be wonderful on a big doll, maybe a vintage one.

  4. What fun! I haven't gone antiquing in years, and I'm getting in the mood to do that again. I like the take-pictures-instead-of-buying-things way of shopping!

  8. I remember a toy like that with letters-you would move the letters around to the slot in the middle and spell things. This one looks like you could do math problems in a calculator sort of way, but you would have to come up with your own answers.
It looks like your eye was caught by some very cool things.

  9. We have a junk/antique shop that's fun to browse. I can usually find things that catch my eye but I seldom buy much. I already have too much stuff!

  12. A great place to explore with your camera, Jeanie! I'm surprised you could be so good and resist the merchandise.

  13. That is a good idea. The next time I go to an antique store, I should just bring a camera. I loved the things that caught your eye.

Now, that number thingy (whatever you call it), I've seen somewhere long ago in my childhood. I have no idea how you use it either.

  14. So I'm wondering if the "calculator" is really an abacus of some kind? It says "letters and numbers" - so maybe something children practiced on? Very intriguing.

I started looking for handkerchiefs in shops after our trip to Africa. Wish we'd had some and want to make sure I have some whenever I might need them!

  15. Taking photos in antique stores could be categorized as an art category of its own. Love these photos.

  22. Oh I had one of those number boards! I can't remember if it was mine or it was a toy at my Grandma's though. I don't think I used it much, math was never my favorite.

I love old linens! I seem to be really drawn to the vintage tablecloths whenever I see them. I loved Downton Abby and was going to order it on DVD but got to looking and found some other movies I've never seen, The Bucaneers, which was wonderful. I watched it in one sitting and it was over 6 hours long and Berkeley Square. I highly recommend both. have a fabulous weekend!

  26. Even if you don't buy anything you came away with a time of just pure enjoyment. I love doing this and taking the camera. It was a gift you gave yourself of some down time. How fun! I did this on Thursday and didn't even take a picture, but just enjoyed.

  27. FUN finds, Jeanie! Especially loving the old linens and blue/white china, all of which I have an affinity for. I used to love junking, and go junking with my Mom & sister. But I've stopped collecting "things"--just art supplies and books now... can only use and store so much, you know. ;o) Still, it IS fun to look! Happy weekend ((HUGS))

  31. I was in an antique mall this weekend, but I was selling rather than buying! I took in a set of Haviland that's been in storage - it's a pink and lavendar pastel which is great for spring or trousseaus, so it was time to move it.

The good news is that the brick and mortar places around here are reporting better business, especially for china and such. The increase in shipping makes it unfeasible to sell it on ebay now - who wants to pay more for shipping than their dishes?

I think I would have gone with the tea towels. OH! Which reminds me - I found a photo processing program which turns a photo into nothing but colored "x"s instead of pixels. You could turn any photo into a cross-stitch pattern in a jiffy! I'm going to see what I can do with Dixie's portrait, and if it looks at all workable, I'll share the info then.
