Road Trip to Stratford, Ontario and the Art of Theatre!

What a great few days! I returned the other night from Stratford, Ontario, where I enjoyed two productions and the lovely town!

After one of the most magnificent drives I've had in a long while (alas, no photos because -- well -- I was driving in new territory), I arrived in Stratford. It was a four-hour drive through loads of beautiful farmland and the lighting was so perfect there were moments it almost took my breath away. I immediately headed for my hotel for early check in before the play.

This was a Rodeway Inn, and the room was large and very clean with a lovely view. I was surprised and pleased. (And reasonably inexpensive, especially with the exchange rate!)

Then it was off to the theatre for my first show. I nailed a good parking spot by the river and took my lunch down to enjoy there.

The river goes through the town and the festival theatre is just up a hill. The color wasn't at peak, but well on the way.

Not a bad luncheon view, is it? And the temps were warm and so it was rather a perfect moment.

My luncheon companion was this handsome bird! He wasn't too pesky!

I even had a Harry sighting -- This is Harry Stratford!

I rather enjoyed a flotilla of geese paddling down the river and Harry S. seemed to be enjoying them too.

On the way up the hill to the theatre, I passed the adjacent ball park, where kids were playing baseball, including a young Mennonite woman, playing in her dark dress. She caught just about anything that came her way and had an amazing arm, throwing that ball farther than I ever could!

My first show was "Something Rotten." If that sounds familiar, it may be because I wrote about seeing it in June when Rick and I went. This time I saw it from the front row!

I love this show (this was my third time). It follows two brothers in Elizabethan times who really want to be playwrights but there is big competition -- William Shakespeare!

They are convinced to write what will be the big new thing -- a musical! Of course there are schemes, plots, and lots of references to just about every Shakespeare play and Broadway musical ever written.

As before, the standing ovation was well deserved!

Then it was off to town to grab some dinner before heading to my next show. I had a terrific Caesar salad with chicken at Pazzo Pizza. No place to sit except at the bar, but I met a couple of lovely people there, which made dinner all the nicer! (Their pizza looked amazing!)

That evening I saw "The Importance of Being Earnest," Oscar Wilde's comedy classic at the smaller Avon Theatre.

When we walked in, this was the scene -- a beautiful, sheer scrim with a floral painting and, though it is hard to see in the photos, a wide bank of flowers running all across the front edge of the stage.

The second act was lovely too and an amazing team of actors moved these sets with great flair and grace, even getting a round of applause for their efforts.

And the costumes were wonderful!

It was a delightful way to end the evening. But my time visiting was far from over. That's for next time!

(Note: Photos from "Something Rotten" and "The Importance of Being Earnest" were copied from the Stratford Festival Facebook page. My thanks to them!)

  5. How fun, Jeanie!! I haven't been to a professional play in quite a while, only school productions.I'm so glad you had a great time at both!! It's nice that Canada is so close for you. Looking forward to reading all of your latest posts, and those coming.

    Happy new week,

  6. Wow Jeanie, what a great get away. I've heard of the theater in Stratford, but that was about it. Both of these plays sound amazing and I would love to see either of them. and it looks like an amazing little town too. I think going in the fall was a nice choice because the summer tourists were gone, and you could enjoy a summery thing to do, which hopefully brought a little bit of summer back to you. I look forward to your next post. hugs-Erika

  14. It is an amazing place. We've been when we were closer.
My DIL performed there. My son, Jesse, performed at Shaw and they met when there was a cricket game between the two theatres.

  16. Both plays sound really entertaining. Interesting that you didn’t choose any Shakespeare plays. Or have they stopped doing them?

It has really been ages since we were in Stratford, and we really should try to see a play there one of these days (months? years?)… best, mae at maefood.blogspot.com

  22. I love live theatre though I haven't gone in a very long time. The two shows you went to looked like absolute fun. The scenery and weather looked very nice as well. The fall colours in eastern Canada and in USA are spectacular.

  23. Lovely! I want to link to this. My blog SEEMS TO BE "taking off" with record high page views every few weeks...but many of the views are definitely coming from foreign bots that get kicked out of the system after a few days. If you don't want to be linked, please warn me before midday 10.29.26.

  24. I am glad that you enjoyed the delights of Stratford, Jeanie. I don’t think I have seen a Mennonite girl playing a game with “regular” guys. Stratford holds more secrets than I knew! I was in nearby Mitchell yesterday, at a wetland we visit often, and next month I will be giving a presentation at the Stratford library on urban birds. Just another kind of live performance!

  28. I love the theater Jeanie and what a beautiful experience your first day there. Love both of those productions! I also like that you shared the photo of baseball playing...I used to play many moons ago, (shortstop) and I do miss it, but could never keep up these days. Several years ago we had a family reunion with an impromptu baseball game...and My mind could not will my body to do what it should do. LOL...I knew when to say 'Uncle'. Thank you for sharing. hugs.

  29. OK, I must have lost what I was posting. Live theater is the best. What a wonderful adventure. The stage with the flowers is gorgeous. Even your salad at the pizza shop sounds lovely. So glad you found a lovely place to stay and a park for a picnic with the birds too. All around a lovely time away in the beauty of autumn.

  30. I've never made it to Stratford, so I appreciate you taking me long to see these gorgeous sights.

  31. You know me. I would have planned a few extra hours into the trip for stops to look at the flowers, and I would have skipped the theater. No matter -- you had a wonderful time in a beautiful spot, and it was great fun seeing you and your non-local Harry: not to mention all that beautiful fall color!

  32. Oh Jeanie, What a wondrous experience. Beautiful surroundings, wonderful plays, good food and room. It's hard to beat that:)

  36. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What a fantastic experience! (And a five-star review, too.) Sounds like you caught some wonderful shows, and the light and color in the natural realm was pretty darn extraordinary, too. Amazing how you find Harry's cousins (siblings?) everywhere you go...

  37. A bank of flowers along the front of the stage and a floral scrim sounds like a lovely way to start Earnest. I like that the cast moved the sets themselves and got applause for it, that’s something you only see in a theatre like that. Sounds like a good few days away.

  38. Those outdoor views are incredible. It almost makes me want to be an anti-snowbird and come north for the fall. I thank you for sharing these plays with us, too. What a great outing you had, Jeannie!

  41. Stratford put on a beautiful display of colour for your welcome! Between the scenery in Stratford and seeing two shows, that's a perfect little get-away. Now I am curious if you took photos along the drive back home.

  42. Two shows in a day! That shows some endurance! They do look like good productions, though, and the scenery is beautiful.

  50. The front-row view of Something Rotten, with the Shakespeare-versus-musicals rivalry, sounds like such a fun third viewing. Did being that close change what you noticed in the staging or costumes compared with June? OhPic Art is an AI image tool, and I enjoy seeing how a scene like that river-and-autumn view gets described.

  59. Looks like a wonderful trip. I've been to the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford three times now, and I've enjoyed every one. Haven't seen "The Importance of Being Earnest" for a long time! Looks lovely. Visiting from the Love Your Creativity link party.

  60. Shame on me, but this year was my first trip to Stratford, CA and I LOVED IT! I saw two Shakespeare plays Midsummer and Tempest, now I wish I'd gone back again to see Something Rotten and Othello too...

Seeing it through your eyes, with all your experience and expertise is particularly special!
