I'm home for a bit, as lake life slows and life here picks up with appointments and gatherings. But in the midst of summer, life on the homefront was (at least for Rick) a mess. At least for Rick! I, on the other hand, was enjoying the lake and missed much of this!
It all started out when the wallpaper was removed from the wall to fix some moisture. The moisture had been around for a bit and -- well, ignored. (You know -- doesn't seem bad at the time!) It may have been helped along by when the tree fell on Rick's roof during the tornado. The holes were patched but it was some time before the actual repairs took place. Boy, was it damp! The wood had rotted from water and carpenter ants. A builder came in to repair this, building a false wall of studs to support the ceiling until new studs and wood could be put into the wall. Then came the dry wall.
And then, time to paint! But before painting, moving out every book, photo, trinket that was displayed; every piece of furniture, every CD.
Why not just tarp it over? Because the floor is a wood parquet floor and had many loose tiles to be put back together and glued down. Painting had to be done before the floor was repaired and refinished. This is just a tiny sample.
Fortunately, Rick enlisted the services of son Greg who has a good deal of experience in interior painting and all the right equipment!
But first came washing the walls and cathedral ceiling of both the living room and kitchen which "run into" each other.
Then repairing ceiling cracks and finally, painting.
Next came the floor. The room, as you can see, is quite large. The floor is parquet, made of blocks that contain individual tiles. It covers the living room and around the corner down the hall.
For Rick, that meant gluing down every section of the floor.
Some of the tiles had come up and that meant putting them back together.
It was like a large jigsaw puzzle with no photo to work from but every tile, though it looked the same, was individual, and did not fit into just any old place -- they had to fit just right.
Then he had to pull up old asbestos material before gluing them into place.
Next up, a floor fellow came in to sand and varnish it. It took some time to cure enough to handle weight, and now Rick is in the process of moving back the rug, furniture, rehanging art and putting books and items back in the cases. I'll post the finished room soon!
The builders also had to reinforce the overhang in the front of the house with a cement post, being uncertain of moisture in an area that could not be accessed or dismantled. It was quite the project!
Also on the home front, my neighborhood has some of the worst potholes in the city and my street was right up there. I've considered planting flowers in them, or taking a dip after a rain.
When I got back from Art Camp, the road was blocked to all but local traffic and they had started repaving.
FINALLY! A street that you can cross without worrying about stepping into a hole and drive down without wondering if your suspension will make it!
Things are looking up!

ReplyDeleteOh my that turned out to be a BIG project. Lucky you have handy husband and son. I love the floors! I can't wait to see it all back together.
ReplyDeleteOh that does sound like quite the summer project to have tackled; the room looks fabulous now! We have really, really bad potholes in pretty much every road in Ct, Mass, & RI (the other states in New England might too but I only tend to drive around in those 3 listed regularly) but they are jarring when you hit them. Glad your road is finally being repaved.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lot of work ~ glad things are progressing ~ thanks for comment on my blog ~ Hugs ^_^
ReplyDeleteThat’s a major repair! Glad Rick has help.
ReplyDeleteMay
Oh my, I'm exhausted looking at all of this. Such a huge project, and I'm glad it's almost finished. So good of Rick's son to help out in time of need. Looking forward to seeing the "after" pics, Jeanie.
ReplyDeleteJeanie, you have a male team that works... Commendable!
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteIt is great that Rick and his son are talented doing all those renovations. Looks good, they did a great job.
I am glad your road was repaved too.
Take care, have a great day!
Jeanie ~
ReplyDeletePoor Rick!! I love the pix of him in his recliner, watching the others! I'm sure he would rather be on a bike, or popping a cork with you!
Hugs ~ bobbie
That situation where one thing uncovers another then another till you wonder why not demolish the place and start over! It's going to be lovely finished. It better be.
ReplyDeletelove the colours you have chosen. The joy of potholes, they are a bane of our lives!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a big project. It's wonderful to know people who have this talent. ❤️
ReplyDeleteOh boy. If M had been dealing with this and I was at my lake house I would have gotten so so many phone calls it would have been easier to just be there. Love the pics of Rick just chilling on the sofa surrounded by chaos. Lol. Your floor is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHi Jeanie :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a huge restoration but it's looking good, thanks to Rick and his son's hard work. The resurfaced road is also agreat improvement.
t will be nice to see photos of the room furnished and everything back in place.
All the best
Sonjia
OMGosh! What a huge project! Looks like a different room in that last photo. That will be so nice! The street also will be so nice when they are done. A lot of upheaval, but so worth it in the end. Wow!
ReplyDeleteWoW!!!! this looks to be a real project!! i am not good at doing projects like this, i cannot handle the chaos. i'm glad he had help and look forward to seeing it all done!!
ReplyDeleteWow so much work!! That floor alone. It is all going to be so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteRepairs all round!...when little jobs griw into huge ones...
ReplyDeleteI laid a wood floor like that just over 20 years ago. Beautiful. Nothing plastic can beat that!!
I would have been grateful to have been at the lake during this process! I lucked out when we did a kitchen update (floor to walls to ceiling to start. My oldest daughter was put on bedrest for a twin pregnancy and I moved to her house until the project was finished.
ReplyDeleteWOW that is one huge repair job. Kudos to Greg for doing it. Rick is going to love his new space. Glad your street was repaired. Janice
ReplyDeleteWow! This is amazing. My husband asked me to do some carpet cleaning and I can't help but complain. this house renovation will be so fun to look back at, when you are done haha.
ReplyDeleteGoodness me! That is major work and repair!
ReplyDeleteHow good that the road has now been resurfaced, what a great improvement.
All the best Jan
Goodness, Jeanie, what a monumental undertaking! Yikes! Glad it's all sorting itself out finally. You'll all be able to breathe a collective sight of relief.
ReplyDeleteThat is pretty darn major!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a project! That parquet floor sounded like a real challenge, but it looks like Rick and Greg did an incredible job. So nice to come back to a freshly paved street, too! Looking forward to seeing the finished photos!
ReplyDeleteWow! What! A! Job! But it looks great now.
ReplyDeleteGlad you are getting your road paved. Potholes are such a nuisance. Happy Fall! ๐๐งก๐
That's a lot of work! I can understand you're missed much of it ; )
ReplyDeleteWow! That's a lot of work. I'm glad that Rick has a son who knows how to do things and has the equipment. Rick also did some painstaking work on the parquet flooring. I love parquet flooring and had some long ago. I didn't realize they were so much work to install. I' glad your road has been repaired too. It's no longer such an eyesore and will be so much easier on your car.
ReplyDeleteOh, dear, what a lot of work. I guess, once it is finished it will be worth it. I hope they used proper safety clothing when dealing with the asbest. A terrible substance.
ReplyDeleteI think you will enjoy the new room and I am looking forward to the final photos. Well done.
Oy is right. What a project! It sounds like it needed to be done for certain. I didn’t realize parquet floors were such a job since I’ve never had any. But just painting can be a project. Is Rick back in and settled? I hope so. ๐. Have a super start to your weekend. We’re still nothome yet but due to the big storm we’ve had to change up our end of trip plans. Hugs Erika.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a major disruption, Jeanie. I am sure Rick is glad to put the work behind him.
ReplyDeleteWhat a saga of hidden damp, repairs and rebuilding, but it sounds like the room is finally coming back to life beautifully, with a little help from family along the way.
ReplyDeleteIt's almost like Rick will have a whole new house! What a job! But progress was made and it's looking great! I love that green wall, by the way. Happy the potholes are being fixed. Niagara Falls had the most amazing deep pot holes I have ever seen! It was quite something.
ReplyDeleteWhat a HUGE undertaking. I am so glad that you had the cabin to 'escape' for a bit. The 'boys' did a wonderful job! Wow! That was a lot of work. I bet you are so excited to see everything done and back in it's place. All done before the Holidays! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteGoing to look great! And getting rid off all that moisture and mold WIN WIN
ReplyDeleteI chuckled at the photo of Rick in the chair, phone in hand, while the work goes on behind him. Obviously he was only taking a break, but it still amused me. As for those parquet floors: sympathy galore. Some of the big, expensive trawlers I've worked on have parquet flooring, and things like icemakers and refrigerators can work havoc on them. Even just sanding and varnishing can be a chore; if pieces have to be replaced, that's beyond me and the carpenter has to be called. It sure looks good in that last photo, though. Love the wall color!
ReplyDeleteWhat a big job but so satisfying when done.
ReplyDeleteCathy
Whew... that was a lot of work on Rick's place - love that green paint color. Can't wait to see the finished room! And lordy, those are some big pot holes! I bet you were glad to see the paving being done. All the best, Dawn P. Albany, GA
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how one little problem can lead to a myriad of almost disastrous issues. ๐ฅด We have 'been there-done that' many times over in the different places we have lived. But it is what it is and one pulls up their big girl panties (or shorts as this case may be) and carries on. But what satisfaction when the job(s) are complete and one can rest assured the worst is over. Perhaps you and Rick should take another retreat much like your birthday to celebrate...and rest! I can't wait to see the finished room(s).
ReplyDeletePot holes are so dangerous, so I am glad you will be able to drive without fear of losing the car in one of them. ๐ฅฐ
Hugs and Happy Fall!
Kari
That was a job! And what a job they did! The floor is beautiful and worth the challenge of fixing just right, but I can’t imagine doing it! That’s a lot of time on the knees. Ouch! Tell Rick it looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it was all worth it when it was all said and done...I hope Rick wore a mask when dealing with the asbestos..
ReplyDeleteWhat a major project Rick is dealing with. He'll be very happy when it's done.
ReplyDeleteMy joints and such start to hurt looking at these photos.
