The Portrait Challenge

Today is Nicole's Friday Face-Off portrait challenge, in which we share portraits we have done of another. Now, if I was really doing this right, it would be something more recent than these. But, as they say, "it's been a month" (or two). So a couple of oldies. I'll kick it off with Rick. (All of these were done in watercolor on paper.)

Then there were these two of Carson. He's our oldest grand. (To give you an idea of how long ago I did these, Carson will be 9 in February.)

And other, done at the same time. (I made his mouth too red here. I need to go in and fix that.

Here's one of their mom, Molly

But I really love  doing pet portraits. This is my cousin's cat, Woody.

And then there was my Marmelade Gypsy.

I didn't like it so I did it over. The color is more accurate here and I did better on the wonky eye above. He still looks like he has on too much eyeliner underneath. (The color in the photo above is a little off -- too much magenta in the printer!)

And of course, my favorite subject, Lizzie!

I really need to get back to doing these again!

Here's lookin' at you, kid!
Check out some of the links at Nicole's for other fun portraitsand her links to many others by lots of different bloggers who love to draw and paint!

  9. Gosh, you do well at portraits! I like Rick's the best but the boys have that special thing, too, that a brush can capture better than a camera. And of course, who wouldn't like pet portraits. I recently did a yellow cat and couldn't get the eyes right. Seeing yours I know what is missing in mine, now!

  17. Wow these are fabulous! I tend to shy away from people in my art work.. though weirdly I was just going through old art work for a post I'm pulling together and saw that in high school and college I did a lot of portrait work. I have never attempted them in watercolor though.

  18. Jeanie, I love your portraits! I've seen most of them, of course, since I've been following you for soooooo long. I've pretty much disappeared from the blogosphere for a while now (hoping to post next month and catch up with my favorite bloggers). I've also hardly gotten my brushes wet for months now and plan to start again, so I thought I'd begin my "catching up" with *you*! Such perfect timing. Thanks for the motivation!

  21. Faces are hard! But in this collection your gift for showing tender, insightful details -- Rick's bemused pensiveness, Carson's smiles, Molly's openness, and, of course, all those wonderful all-knowing cats' eyes -- is beautifully clear. It was such a treat to see these -- thank for sharing!

  25. OK, I want to know how you do this. OMGosh the skin tone on all of these are magnificent. Especially on Rick. Seriously, I do believe it is the best I have ever seen. Each piece is spectacular including the kitties. Each peace is so well observed right down the smallest details. Can't believe Carson is 9 already. Thank you so much for sharing your art with FFO and the portrait challenge.
    Have the very best weekend

  29. I should think anyone would love for you to paint their portrait or that of their cat or other pet. These are all very like. But of course, so appealing compared to the picture or model you were working from. Yes, paint more portraits!!

  30. You have such a lovely watercolour technique!

  35. Jeanie. I’m really impressed with your paintings! I painted one years ago when I was in Florida. I think it was so so. I’d really like to do more animals.

  37. Of course you know which are my favorites. They're the ones you did of my Dixie Rose, and of my favorite squirrel! Dixie's just above my computer, and the squirrel's on a living room bookshelf, where I can see them every day. You did Dixie from a photo of her at about four months old, and every time I look at it, I remember her, and taking the photo. It's wonderful!

  38. It really takes a special talent to do faces well. Your portraits are outstanding! Lovely to see the real person in your drawing.

  39. Excellent, Jeanie! I really love the one of Rick!

  40. These are great. I have not ventured into faces and rarely do animals. I always say I don’t do faces , Fur, feathers and there’s one other F. none of the artists that I followed to them much either so I have not been tempted very often. Never faces ..thanks for sharing.

  41. Oh my gosh, Jeanie. You nailed these. Kudos.

  42. Your portraits are exquisite, Jeanie. The grands are so cute, I really like Molly's portrait and you captured Rick so well. My favorites of course are the cats - how can they not? I have never tried to paint any of "my" cats that I "had" throughout my life, but perhaps I should try this. Wonderful work, Jeanie!

  43. What a fun site you started with, i got lost over there and followed her. Your portraits are so good...a tip I did find out for highlighting is a tube of white gouache mixed with the color underneath...to highlight something...makes an easy fix. Sometimes 2-3 or layers of lightening, getting lighter on top of each HUGS< Sandi

  44. Jeanie I am in awe....you are so talented and I have no words to express your beautiful pics. They are perfectly matching the originals. Great job my friend.

  45. I really like the one of Molly. Her sunglasses provide an interesting effect.

  46. Wow, dear Jeanie, these are absolutely wonderful portraits!
    They're not easy to paint.
Yes, do it again. You'll love it... and so will we.
    Lots of love from Viola.
