Starting the New Year Right!

The calendar has turned over and I'm doing my best to turn over with it!  Some recent doc appointments have brought about some medication changes and I'm feeling much improved! What a relief! And nothing like a pretty fruit arrangement to really make your day!

I've been spending a lot of time at the computer lately, looking at old photos. No, not for blogging. Not even to delete the bad ones (of which there are plenty.) It is to add my own photos to the Aura photo frame that Kevin and Molly gave me for Christmas which is high on my "best gift ever" list. (Left: Covid days/egg hunt; Right: Good times in England)

You may have one of these, a frame connected to the internet where you can upload favorite photos that cycle through in a random slide show. They put a number of photos on it to begin with, many (especially of the kids) that I had never seen before. I love this match up of Rick with Greg and Kevin combined with Kevin with Carson and Cam! Not staged, just a happy accident!

Well, you know what happened next -- I had to add my own!  (Left: Carson's baptism; a 70s themed birthday party.)

And finally, a very favorite photo of Rick with Carson. You can feel the love.

There is only one problem with this frame -- and it's a big one. I set it up right above my computer on the eye-level shelf on the desk. I keep looking at it all the time; my typing constantly needs correction and I productivity has slowed because as these cycle through, I'm not only seeing new things, I'm remembering them.

Another present from Team Family (actually Cam, he's 7) was this Lego cat. It has a great story.

Rick was kid sitting before Christmas and they went to the mall. I soon got a phone call -- a child's voice saying, "Do you like cats?" "You know I do!" I replied. "Do you like Legos." (Oh, Oh!) "Well, I don't like stepping on them in my bare feet. they hurt." "Do you like putting them together." "Well," I said, "I don't think I'm very good at it."

This kid is cagey! "Well, I could help you with it!"

And there you have it. I don't know how he talked his mom into it, but I now have a paraplegic Lego cat. Cam did the first 80 pages of the 106 page booklet. I did the rest, though by the time I got to page 104, I realized that either I had used the wrong pieces elsewhere or else they were either lost or not included! But he's cute, even though he's missing a front leg! You can also build a dog and a bird from the same pieces. Winter is long. Stay tuned.

That said, we had a brief spell of 55 degree weather and despite the potential of rain, it was a good day to check out the Ditch. It was a solo walk -- not even a dog walker was out, no people resting on the benches.

It was very quiet, very little critter action, apart from this Canada Geese family in the large pond.

Something relatively new though -- put up last summer -- are a number of plaques telling about what the Ditch does, what kind of life is in those ponds, and the environmental elements. They're quite interesting and a nice addition

 \

On the way back, I noticed the Deflatables. I find these so sad. They may be very cheery when they are up but once they deflate, they just look sort of lost and pathetic, like Santa died.

But I fault no one for having Christmas out still. I certainly do. It's slowly starting to come down, Santas replaced with Snowpeople, Christmas pillows tucked away. Here's the kitchen shelf by the sink.

And another kitchen shelf. They make me smile.

I swapped out the Christmas Tree dishes for the snowmen plates, and it was good timing! We were having friends for dinner and I wanted a festive, happy table.

I made the easiest and most wonderful meal I think I've done in ages and I'll do it again. You should try it too. Carole of From My Carolina Home posted this recipe for Greek Pork Tenderloin ages ago. It is so simple -- a basic, limited ingredient marinade rubbed on the tenderloin and put in a bag in the fridge for up to eight hours (made in the morning). When it came out of the fridge and onto the pan, I added the grape tomatoes and put the marinade over them.  And that was it. Just had to bake it.

A bit of brown rice, some haricots vert with almonds and lemon juice and a Greek salad (which I bought at a local restaurant that makes great ones) and for dessert, baklava from Costco. Everything was ready to roll so I could enjoy the good company.

And grand company it was, a time filled with terrific conversation, laughter, thoughtful discussions and great camaraderie.

I have to do this more often.

  1. The snowmen are adorable! They are a nice way to transition from Christmas to January winter.

  2. Now you are into Lego! there are lots of adult things to build - apparently - if only there were more hours in the day!

You are so right about the flat santas etc - they look really sad and certainly not coping well with January.

  3. Fun to see all these great photos. You were given lovely gifts and the fruit bouquet looks luscious! Good to know your meds have been sorted out and you are feeling better. Thank you for the link to the recipe. I am always looking for something new and tasty. Loved looking at all your collectibles too. I am slow taking mine down but will be starting this week. The deflatables in our neighborhood have just about gone. That’s a lovely way to end your post today, and a very enjoyable one it was too. Have a great week and thanks Jeanie!

  6. We had a digital frame years ago when our boys were small and I LOVED it so much but sadly after a few years it stopped working. Now I'm wondering why I didn't just get a new one to replace it. Your lego cat is cute; even if it is missing a leg.

  7. Wonderful snowmen decor, and the table is lovely. Great photo of your Greek Pork Tenderoin! I hope everyone enjoyed it. Love the fairy lights on your window. Thanks for the mention!!

  8. Be sure to take very good care of that paraplegic cat, Jeanie. Your simple meal looks terrific. We have to move in that direction, otherwise I am sure we will be having more people over for coffee and less of them for dinner!

  9. Such a wonderful gift . I find it so uplifting to be looking at my old photos. I sometime look at my photos the whole time I'm on short plane rides. It brings back such joyful feelings and memories. Enjoy it.

  10. Glad to hear that you're feeling better and the LEGO cat it sooo fun. I did a camera once and loved it. Fun little 3D puzzles. That frame sounds like a perfect gift for you. Happy New Year.

  11. I took my Christmas decorations, such as they were, down Christmas Day. We celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve and nobody was going to be here to see them anymore.
There’s nothing better than pork tenderloin. I always do it on the grill and It’s so tender. Have a good week Jeannie..

  12. We received the same electronic frame — it’s really fun. We have it in the dining room so the distraction is less of a problem. Our granddaughters are much older so we have lots of fun seeing them as tiny, such as the first time they bought ice cream with their own money, when they couldn’t exactly look over the counter at the ice cream scooper!
At least your still-displayed decor isn’t deflated! Our neighbors have some flattened snowmen still lying on the lawn.
    best… mae

  13. Sue has put our christmas stuff away, and the neighbour took down his big, bright display on the weekend when the weather turned a little warmer.

  16. I didn't know that fruit arrangements are a thing. I guess I have seen them before, but I thought they only appeared on hotel buffets. The pork tenderloin recipe looks good. More importantly, I have all the ingredients for the marinade; sometimes the recipes you cooks link would require quite an outlay at the grocery store! This is one I'll give a try, once I've worked through some of the main dishes and leftovers I have stashed in the freezer.

I was especially pleased by your mention of a walk to the ditch! That's really, really good news! You must have been thrilled to be out and about a bit, and feeling better.

  17. I must say a lot of folks in Florida use blow-up decor in the yard. Quite a few only stay blown up for a day and then go flat. I would not want to go out almost daily to blow them up again. And yes, they do look sad!

  18. You received some lovely gifts. .Love looking at old photos; a digital frame is so fun. The Lego cat is adorable the Greek dinner looks delicious. Happy new week.

  19. Those adorable snowmen would make me smile too! I like how you moved your decor into winter instead of jumping to spring. I have some snowmen I put out too, but not this year, with my broken leg. I decorated but I can't ask my husband to bring up "all the tubs" - or he'll want to get rid of some of it....ahaha. Have a great week.

  21. Jeanie what a perfect way to start my day and give me energy. I have started removing Christmas but find I want to keep twinkling lights etc as they make me happy...we shall see. What wonderful gifts you have and a nice Greek dinner that would be so simple to make. I agree...more time for guests is better than hours in the kitchen. Hugs

  22. Hello Jeanie :)
I'm so pleased you are feeling better with your change of meds. You received wonderful gifts, and the photos are great, and bring back lovely memories. Nice Lego Kittie, a bit wonky but perhaps you'll have more luck making the dog or bird. Cute winter decorations, including the fruit arranement, and the tenderloin of pork looks delicious. Nice photo of you all sitting round the table.Lovely post to start the new year. and all the best wishes for a happy and healthy new year.

  23. Lego is simply amazing and the range they do for both children and adults is wonderful.

Have a good week, and so pleased that your medicine changes have made a difference for the better.

  24. Glad to hear the med changes are helping!!! And the Lego gifts are so adorable!
About 20 years ago there was the best Greek restaurant in a nearby community. It was run by a family, one of my favorite employees was the grandson, maybe 10-12 years old who would act as host when his mom was working. So professional and he even wore a tie. The food was fabulous - all homemade and so delicious. And the service was outstanding - checking on you but not overbearing. And the prices so reasonable.
Then grampa died and the sons began to bicker. I think there was even a court case. And whoever came out on top at the end? He turned it into a dive. It's changed hands multiple times and last time we drove by I think the building was falling down. We still reminisce about Antigone's.

  25. I too have been slack on blogging. This time of year there are usually so many other things to take up our time...shopping starting off! Something I would love to back up off of some. Then there is that needed (for some) not needed (for others) family time! That is a great way of taking up time! Mine consist of bdays, births, showers, and holidays. Oh and NO UMP! lol....Anyway, I really hope you enjoyed your time. By the way, I totally love SNOW FOLKS, and yours of the shelve are adorable.

  26. That is a great gift for the photos. I love seeing your photos of the family and the things your are doing. I thought the lego cat was an AI cat at first. Have a great day today.

  27. Your Lego cat is a tri-paw! That's a cute little Christmas present.

We still have the Christmas tree up. I'm hoping to take it down this weekend.

Your dinner with friends looks/sounds great. It's so nice to do things like that in January once it seems like all the festivities are over.

  28. That was such a cute story about your son asking if you like Legos. My 39 yeare old son received the new Jaws Lego set from his sister. It took him 8 hours to put it together. It's his pride and joy, Take care and have a great week.

  29. So glad about the improved meds -- you even SOUND happier! Love all the other notes, too: the picture frame (such a delightful distraction), the paraplegic cat, and the delicious dinner with friends. On a personal level, sounds like you are enjoying a wonderful start to the new year!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think I forgot to mention in my previous comment: that pork tenderloin recipe sounds delicious! I'm beginning to believe that this cut of meat deserves a lot more attention than it typically receives...

  31. The digital frame sounds great, it's a good way to see photos that are buried in folders we no longer look everyday. Love the Lego Cat!

  32. This is a lovely post - the adorable lego cat idea, the really very funny picture of Carson yelling at his christening (suspect that happens more often than not with kids suddenly finding cold water all over their heads) and the beautiful picture of him with Rick. And that dinner looks just great. I am very glad the new meds are making you feel better, about time - and wonderful!

  33. going through old pictures is ALWAYS therapeutic for me. i love those digital frames, i have one also and also received it as a gift. it is the best gift ever for us picture takers!! i save a lot of photos on my phone, i enjoy looking through them when i am in the hospital! we are being urged to wear masks again in new jersey...doctor appoints and hospital visits, they are required. i am glad you are feeling better, be careful, we have a lot of cases of the flu and covid here!

  34. I used to have one of those frames...but now I wonder what happened to it? Hmmm. They are lots of fun, aren't they? It sounds like your new year is starting off on a good foot...and your meal sounds delicious. Now I must say I love your Lego kitty. He/she is very cute, even if they only have 3 legs. Does it matter? No! The big question is did you have fun? Have a great new week Jeanie. hugs-Erika

  35. What a wonderful time. Good to hear you are feeling good. The frame is a wonderful idea. Someone gifted it to my uncle and aunt recently and they too are loving it. So sweet of Cam to get and partially make the Lego cat for/with you.

  36. What a perfectly wonderful meal. I love simple and nice meals. After all, it is the company and the visit that counts. Love the lego cat!!!! And the snowmen decorations too. What thoughtful gifts. Now I am intrigued by the picture frame.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jeanie, posting photos to that frame will keep you busy for a while. I had a smaller version years ago that was bought at a thrift store. It worked, but I soon tired of the novelty (for me) and it found a new home. I will also be replacing Christmas decos with snow folks.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have a photo frame too but sadly have not yet loaded photos onto it! Love the 3 legged cat, lol.

  39. Apart from the chocolate: yum!
The baptism looks like drama, LOL.
Love the Lego cat(´s story). But oh, the deflates!
Love you decorate seasonally. I love a lot here, huh?
The recipe sounds great! (and the pizza, too!). It is something even Ingo is allowed to eat, I put in my fav-list, thank you!
    To friends, too!
    Have a great day.

  45. Good news your medication is sorted snd you feel better! Great photos, dinner gatherings always melt the heart.

  46. Oh, I love those photos! I love looking through all my photos - I need to set aside the next rainy Saturday or Sunday and just go through them yet again. I still have my Christmas decor up; outside little bits I brought in after Jan 6th (I never take down prior to that) but last weekend my guy got that awful Flu A variant and I was being nursemaid - he still has fatigue and his fever broke after 6 days ! This Flu is NO JOKE. I haven't gotten it, and I don't want it. Anyways, I am taking 2 vacation days this week, Thurs & Fri, to pack up Christmas and dust and vacuum and re-set the decor a bit, leaving Saturday and Sunday to just VEG. I think I might skip Valentines and St Pat's decor this year and just go straight into Easter decor mid March. Happy New Year !!!! Dawn P. Albany, GA

  49. Between feeling better with the medication changes, reliving memories through your Aura frame, enjoying creative moments with Cam, and discovering a wonderfully simple meal, it sounds like the new year has begun on a genuinely uplifting note

  50. We had a delicious pork tenderloin for Christmas Day. I still remember how tender it was. So good.

The digital photos look like a lot of fun!

  51. I think Taco got that same Lego set from my MIL for Christmas. Paul does the assembly and then he plays with it! He got 7 Lego sets for Christmas and we have only assembled one. We are slowly letting them put them together to stretch it out through these cold months!

That Aura frame is such a great gift! It’s the gift that keeps on giving! I love that the photos of Kevin with his boys and Rick with his boys came up at the same time. What a coincidence!

That tenderloin dish sounds so good and so simple!

  52. Dead Santa? Paraplegic cats? What a tragic post! Other than those it looks like you had a great week!

  53. I've never heard of this frame before - very neat idea, although I'm wondering if it keeps moving while you're on the computer, cause that might be a distraction for me. That Lego cat is too cute. Oh, I loved seeing the Ditch pictures, even if nothing was happening that day. Those deflated lawn decorations look so awesome when they're all lit up at night, and so sad looking when they're deflated. I can see why you still have a few wintery things on your kitchen shelf; it makes me smile too. Love those houses. Your pork tenderloin looks delicious with all the sides. And you set such a pretty table with all the blue. You've had a nice January so far, Jeanie. : )

  56. I am so happy the med changes have made you feel better. The Lego cat is fun, aren’t grandchildren the best. Our oldest granddaughter gave my Dad a nerf gun one year for Christmas. When he opened it, he told her he had always wanted one! The meal looks delicious and I know a walk around the ditch lifted your spirits!

  58. I am so glad to hear you are feeling better! Best News all day!
I like that photo thingy. I would love to have one of those, because like you I have thousands of photos and lots of memories attached.
Switching to snowmen is so clever. You carry the spirit of the season ahead instead of putting it all away.
I will certainly try to make that pork roast. It looks so appetizing!

  59. We had thought about getting something like the Aura photo frame and then never did. Maybe one day.
The dinner sounds easy and delicious. We don't eat that much meat anymore, but I can see myself trying this.

  63. This was a great post, from top to bottom. I love the Lego cat! In fact, I think I must have one. I have a friend I visit in a nursing home that loves to do Legos, so if I bring him the Lego Cat, he will put it together for me ... and we will both be happy :) You have a beautiful family and having them flash by you in a frame has to be wonderfully distracting ... And your food looks wonderful and I love the idea of "easy" . You are such fun, Jeanie ... I always look forward to visiting you. Hope your New Year is off to a good start :)
