Last weekend wasn't my best. I was nervous about my surgery, but what was really getting to me was wanting to get the house decorated before. I was told I'd feel pretty good within a couple of days, but that didn't factor in the sinus and lung infections! Still, I have Energizer Bunny characteristics when under the gun, so I decided I would power decorate the house before. And I was making headway!
| One tree up -- but this photo is from last year! |
(The main reason for this was that I wouldn't be able to lift my arm above by shoulder or carry more than 10 pounds for a week to ten days.)
One small tree tree up, another in place just waiting for decorations (that one is in the hall.) The wall tree in my room was in place too. And my mantel was decorated. Yay for me! I even had a few vignettes on shelves and the top of the china cabinet. (Pix for all of these to come.)
(And I should add, we had some fun too -- delicious dinners done by Rick and Scrabble. I even won one and lost the other by one point!)
Then Rick decided that he would plaster and paint the mess in my ceiling that had been there since November 2023 when Kevin dry walled the remnants of a leaking problem. (I had to look that date up on the blog!). He decided to do it now. So, down came the mantel, up went the ladder with a promise to finish before surgery date.
So, that room was torn up, the dining table filled with everything from the mantel or within paint-dripping distance. But we would get the big tree in place -- and lit -- so I could decorate while my arm was still kept low. I was elated. The best laid plans!
There is the pile of tree in the living room. I could find all of it. Except the tree stand. After numerous calls to every hardware and big-box store in town, I ended up ordering a stand. It's not like the tree is going up Christmas Eve -- it will be up long before Rick's. But not when I'd hoped.

| Do you think I could find anyplace in town with a stand that would fit that? |
So, since I wouldn't be able to drive for a week or so either, I went to Trader Joe's to stock up on provisions. If you shop at TJ's you probably know that the cashier staff (well, all the staff) is personable and friendly. They chat, ask questions, treat you like you belong there, it is your store and they're glad to have you. The lovely young woman who was working that day was no exception. She asked me how my day was.
I told her. I know. I should have some restraint. But I blurted out that it wasn't going well -- I was preparing for surgery that was making me nervous, the house is in chaos and to top it off, I can't find the stand for the Christmas tree and no one in town had one. "Oh well," I said. "You just have to go with it. First world problems. I have a roof, food, friends. It'll be OK."
What I didn't realize was that as I was telling her this, another colleague passed by. I wasn't aware of him, but then he was standing beside her. In his hands was this bouquet of flowers. He said "I heard you as I was going by. I hope this helps," or something close.
And I started to cry. Wouldn't you? Not ugly, sobbing, weeping cry, but I was teared up and so touched. I was pretty "welled-up" in the store, but I made it out of the store before I let the tears really do their thing. Too much pent up emotion -- anticipation, exhaustion, you name it.
And then, home to keep decking the halls. Just not the tree. And -- this just in -- last night we thought maybe we could reuse the tree stand from the old artificial tree. It fit! And now it has lights on it and garland. The rest can come later. AND, Rick finished the ceiling. True, the drop cloths are still there, the repair gear in the hall waiting for him to take it home. I still don't have the mantel up but most of the mess is gone and I can cope!
Finally, today is my surgery. I may be a bit slow visiting for a couple of days but back soon with the November books and an update! Thanks for all the good wishes!

You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Hope all goes well. The kindness of strangers can mean so much...just what you needed. Karen (Back Road Journal)

Oh my, lady! Life is fluctuating; one thing done, then a few more...and of course, Kevin decided to finish up a 2023 project! I hope your shoulder gets treated and repaired, and that Rick is aware of stuff you are putting up with. God bless you.
ReplyDeleteNow do you have time to breathe? If so, please do. All will be well.
ReplyDeleteThings come right in the end.
ReplyDeleteThe people in Trader Joe's...yes, people can still come together and give and support.
Adding some virtual (((hugs)))
Praying for your swift recovery, Jeannie! 💐 Here, some more flowers. 😄
ReplyDeleteSorry for that extra n in your name!
ReplyDeletePraying for your shoulder and God will guide the surgeons hands and give you peace.
ReplyDeleteI almost started crying while reading this! Trader Joe's staff are the friendliest people ever and so helpful. And how WONDERFUL that her colleague gave your flowers! So sweet!!!
ReplyDeleteI am the person who puts too much thought into how my house should look for Christmas and then I run into time and other constraints and it doesn't live up to my expectations. And I can't imagine the state I would be in if I was having surgery so close to the big day. The ceiling repair just sounds so much like my husband. And your tree fit! Fabulous!
Good luck with the surgery!!!
...all things that you want to accomplish aren't always possible.

ReplyDeleteMy goodness, lady! Life is never easy or predictable.
ReplyDeleteYou have to Love Trader Joe's. That is an amazing gift and it reminds you there are good people out there. My decorating is going slowly and I don't even have surgery scheduled. :) I hope it went well today and you are feeling great ASAP. hugs-Erika

ReplyDeleteGoodness, you really turned on the energetic bunny! I hope your surgery goes well and that you're up and about in no time!
ReplyDeletei started to cry when i read this...there are so many wonderful people in this world and in TJ's. i was looking for maple cookies in TJ's...they were sold out but as i was leaving the store the woman came running after me, she had found one box. it had a paid sticker on it and she refused to let me pay. your story reminded me of that. tonight, on our way home we stopped for gas, in nj we do not pump our own. the young man was so happy, so nice AND he cleaned our windshield. it was 28 degrees outside and he was so joyful...i love moments like that!! i hope the surgery went well and that you recover quickly!!
ReplyDeleteJust reading about your Trader Joe's story make me cry. They are so caring in that store. And I am not a crier. I think you did well preparing for today. I held you in the light and will continue to do so as you heal. I just know it went well and soon you will be feeling better. Sending love!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, my, Jeanie! I guess you have prepared pretty well for your resting time. It was a suspenseful story, though, and I was anxious until the end. Pre-surgery flowers is a pretty special thing! I hope you get more, and return home peaceful <3
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your surgery; hope you are feeling well soon. How lovely to get the flowers!
ReplyDeletecheers

The Trader Joe story is so sweet, I love all those kind people out there. It is best not to stress over decorating. I do wish you a speedy recovery. Take care, enjoy your day and great week ahead!

ReplyDeleteOh. Reckon all went well and you make hopefully a speedy recovery, hugs! I mean everything else went well and boy so nice the man overheard not only you but also his arrogant colleague! Who hopefully learned a bit about first Wold problems!! In her First World compassion obviously is lacking!
ReplyDeleteAs my friend Varnish John used to say, "Do what you can, not what you can't." That's not only good advice for decorating, it will be good advice for your recovery. Give yourself the gift of a little relaxation -- it's as lovely as those flowers you received!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful story at TJ!! Praying that all goes well with your surgery and that you will be the energetic bunny again soon. Thinking of you and keeping you in our prayers.

Tiny miracles turn up when you least expect it! How generous of the folks at Trader Joe's! Sometimes a listening ear and a kind gesture is just what the doctor ordered! Best of luck with your surgery! You've got this!
ReplyDeleteYou accomplished so much. You are, indeed, an energizer bunny. What a nice gesture the flowers were. Of course you were touched. What a day for you today. Best wishes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice person to buy you flowers in the store! You needed the support right at that moment. I hope all goes well with the pacemaker, and that you are back in fine shape in no time!

ReplyDeleteJeannie: I sure hope surgery went well and all is good !!! Thinking of you!!! Dawn P. Albany, GA
ReplyDeleteSuch a dear man right next to you in line at Trader Joe's. That bouquet of flowers was meant for you right then and there, as you were having such a difficult day. I smiled when I saw the red carnation, as carnations are my second favorite flower. Their smell is wonderful, and they last for so long. It's good you got your tree up and did a little decorating. It will all come, don't over do with your health issues. I look forward to seeing Christmas decked out in your home, Jeanie. Thinking of you with your surgery, and sending comfort and love.
ReplyDelete~Sheri

ReplyDeleteYou have been busy and have a lot on your mind...can be overwhelming..Sometimes we need to give ourselves a break!! Hope all is well today!!
The people at Trader Joe's are just the best. How very sweet to give you this little bouquet of flowers - I would have teared up completely at that moment. I'm glad that your dau went better after that and I do hope that your surgery went well. I'm sending you big hugs.
ReplyDeleteOh, sweet friend, I was in your shoes a few days ago. I had a few tears as well, as I was struggling with my cane, and I could not bake Christmas cookies. Well, I am doing much better with my cane, and I will be baking cookies in a few days. I may need to sit and rest during the process, but I will be able to.
ReplyDeleteYou too will be able soon.
I wish I could hug you, dear friend: prayers for your surgery to go well and your recovery to go fast.
I hope that everything went well for you, Jeanie! I'm glad that some of the chaos cleared up before your surgery. All our decorations are still up in the crawl space. I don't know how far I'll get. I'm starting with writing Christmas cards. Please, please take care of yourself. Even Energizer bunnies need to let their batteries cool once in a while. All the best to you!
ReplyDeleteSometimes a small gesture makes all the difference when we’re stressed and overwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a smooth surgery and a gentle, speedy recovery.
Hugs, Jeanie
What a lovely happening!
ReplyDeleteIt's certainly understandable why you burst into tears. It's the build up of everything. That really was so sweet for the colleague to give you flowers. Some people are real gems. I'm glad to hear that you got the tree up and found a solution for the stand. By now I'm thinking your surgery is over and you are recovering well. Hugs. xx
ReplyDeleteSo much on your plate right now, and, well, for a lot of this year. You have had a crazy ride, Jeanie. I hope you can rest a bit. Ignore the mess. It will be dealt with in plenty of time. Hard to do, but necessary right now to give you time to heal.
ReplyDeleteYou’ve shown incredible resilience and heart, and it’s wonderful how small acts of kindness, like those flowers, can lift us amidst the chaos
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, Flowers from someone at TJ's!!!! I would have cried too, & those are healing tears...release...You all are amazing with the positive outcome! How did the surgery go? So now you're relaxing. I've been thinking of you as I've been decorating with handmade papercrafts, little drawings & stuff...Thanks for visiting my blog which I haven't entered in awhile until today & the other day....
ReplyDeleteJeanie this made me teary! I am so glad that the world still has such kind souls in it. And yes, I would have cried as well.
ReplyDeleteI hope that you are recovering well, and are warm and snuggling with Lizzie.
There are still lovely and caring people in our world. Like you, I would have been crying. I hope your surgery went well and that the healing process will also go well! Take care of yourself, Jeanie!
ReplyDeleteYes, I would have been in tears too at such a sweet kindness. I love Trader Joe's, we have the same kind of friendly people but yours went above and beyond. So glad the surgery went well. I read your update. Your tree is gorgeous! I love scrabble and play regularly. So impressed with all that you got done beforehand. Speedy healing my dear friend and take good care of yourself. I am back from my blogging break and enjoying catching up :)
ReplyDeleteHello Jeanie :)
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to receive an unexspected gift of flowers just when you needed lifting up from all your worries. Get well soon Jeanie everything will be OK. Hugs.
Sonjia.
Jeanie sometimes we just need to have a good cry...it is a sign of emotional strength and a way to heal. Hugs and prayers
ReplyDeleteOh, dear, what a hassle, Jeanie. So much to do. I must say you are really well organised to think of all these things you might not be able to do after your surgery. And the people working in TJ, how very nice of them. I have never heard of anyone getting flowers from the staff like that.
ReplyDeleteI am happy you got everything in order. I hope the after surgery time will keep you well and not to much pain, or other hassles.
At least you have Christmas to look forward to.
Came back to read this heartwarming story again.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of this verse:
"Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers,
for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."
Hebrews 13:2
Pretty sure that colleague was an angel. :) Well, I can imagine them working at Trader Joe's, can't you?
Get well soon, Jeanie. I am praying for you.
Sandi
I love your tree and hope you are resting well ❤️
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice looking tree, hope your surgery goes well.
ReplyDeleteI hope all went well with the surgery.
