I think we were like many of you, who enjoyed multiple Christmases! As you saw in the last post, we had fun with the kids, decorating Rick's trees and doing the zoo walk. That was Monday. On Tuesday, it was our "Christmas Eve." I took the morning off so I could get a couple of things done at home (like sleep) and make cookies to decorate. But soon it was time for fun! (The clean-up would be later!)
We (I mean the collective "we") were going to build a gingerbread house. It started out well enough.
Then it didn't. That was when the roof fell off.
Finally, finished -- at least as finished as it would ever get. (By this time I had lost all helpers!) I named it Mariopul, because it was a tragic reminder of the war in Ukraine -- and knowing that their Christmas would not be so merry and bright as ours. After all, it was only our gingerbread house that fell apart -- not the roof over our heads. (Lessons learned -- this is a two-day project, not a two hour one!)
And of course, there would be plenty of food.
Kevin did the heavy lifting on the cooking with Rick as Grillmeister and Cam as fire-watcher in chief!
Carson had to get out there, too, so it was a gathering of three generations of Oberle men!
A fine feast with steak and sauteed beans, rolls and wonderful sauces. Dessert would come later!
Because the kids had to leave after breakfast and reindeer games for their next Christmas on "real" Christmas Eve, we decided to do presents that evening. Cam gave me a Lego cat to build -- he got the first half or two thirds done!
Meanwhile, Carson's bigger gift was an animation station so he could make flip books. He played with that all evening and all the next morning too. It was a hit!
The next morning it was a new breakfast casserole. I give it an 8 but next time, when I add a couple things to it, it will be a 9, maybe even a 10! Still, very good. While we were waiting for breakfast to bake, we decorated those cookies!
Some of us ate more than we decorated!
After breakfast we played "Reindeer Games," (basically the dice came where you get a wrapped prize when you roll doubles or you can steal from another player). The pinata we never got opened this fall ended up getting very -- well, pulverized!
Of course we had to get some family photos. We tried every combo of people except all six of us, but you can see why these two were my favorites.
Rick and I chilled out for a few hours after departure, then headed to nearby Jackson, Michigan, to see a friend of Rick's do his first Christmas service as a priest. After, we headed to his main church to see the beautiful mural painted on the altar wall. I'll write more about this around Easter, as it tracks Holy Week, but here's a sneak preview. It was amazing.
Our "real" Christmas day found us being lazy at home, first a Rick's where we opened stockings and had breakfast, and later at mine for dinner and presents.
Dinner would be pretty simple, a chicken and veg casserole. We'd had plenty the day before and after enjoying some wonderful appetizers of crackers, cheese and nuts (another gift from a good friend!) we weren't terribly hungry. And of course, I had to set a pretty table, bringing in mom's dishes, crystal and silver to the table, with a terrific vintage tablecloth courtesy of Panoply blogger Rita! It's nice having "friends" at the table!
I quickly pulled together a little centerpiece, featuring a sweet felted Santa made by my future teacher, Linda Wonser, and two sweet Emma Bridgewater mugs from my friend Lin.
Some Christmas movies for me, watching the Royal Carol Service, the King's Speech, Jimmy Kimmel's speech and the "Call the Midwife" Christmas special.
And, on Boxing Day we just chilled out, having an easy goof off day. There was freezing rain outside and I had no desire to vacate the premises for a bit! After all, all is calm.
Finally!

Hello Jeanie,
ReplyDeleteLooks like you all have made many happy new Christmas memories. Baking cookies is fun. I like seeing the kiddies open their presents. Have a happy last weekend of 2025.
Are you quite sure there was enough activity?? Not surprised you needed a quiet day, after all that fun!
ReplyDeleteHappy Holiday my friends
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas! I hope you’re still enjoying that "all is calm" feeling today.
ReplyDelete...make sure that merriment never stops!
ReplyDeleteIt's all about warm lights and warm times with the family imo, and you did just that. The storm that blew through last night wasn't a walloping one, but we are now in danger of an ice storm.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a very full Christmas. We gave my son the Jaws Lego set. It was a big hit (He's 39). I hope you have a happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteYou are the Christmas elf! Icing everywhere!
ReplyDeleteI loved the King's speech this year. He is a no nonsense, subtle guy!
It looks like a fun time, and having a low key day after all the Christmas excitement sounds great. I'm having my low key day today...and hopefully tomorrow too. :) I think you'll have fun with the Lego,as long as all the packages didn't get ripped open at once. :) And I think I'd eat more cookies than decorate too. They look delicious. I hope you have a great Twixtmas and lovely time up to New Years. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely wonderful Christmas celebration!!!!!
ReplyDelete(just a hint - with kids I make the houses ahead of time, letting each wall dry before the next. Then they decorate a dry house).
I love these photos. I can't do much on line with my eye. It is healing though. Wanted to wish you and your family the best for 2026
ReplyDeleteOh my, so many smiles, so much festivity, and so much fun! Looks to me like you did Christmas right -- including the trip to Jackson! Hope you're enjoying the opportunity now to revel in the "all is calm" part of the Christmas experience...
ReplyDeleteIt certainly was a busy christmas for you. New Years should be a piece of cake.
ReplyDeleteDear friend, your photos are beautiful! Everyone looks great and it looks and sounds like you all had a wonderful time!

It looks and sounds like you had a very full and wonderful Christmas ... I think you deserve a few quiet das now.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy this last weekend of 2025 and sending early Happy New Year wishes.
All the best Jan
You make every holiday merry. It’s wonderful that you document these family get togethers, so the boys will be able to look back on them when they get older. All of your family and friends feel special.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely Christmas! Your table looks so festive.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful Christmas, Jeanie. Good food, yummy goodies, fun games, a visit from the little ones, and those frosted cookies! That church is beautiful. How special that this is his first Mass as Priest. I hope the new year is a good one for you and me, Jeanie.

ReplyDeleteLooks like you made some great memories Jeanie. No gingerbread house or cookies for us but we had a real nice time with our son and daughter-in-law.
ReplyDeleteYou capture the warmth and complexity of a truly layered Christmas, full of family chaos, generosity, quiet reflection, and the sobering awareness that celebration and gratitude often sit alongside remembrance and perspective
ReplyDeleteThis looks the merriest of Christmas fun Jeanie - our Gingerbread roof always collapses too. Like you we have been celebrating on several Christmas days - the joys of family across the world. Enjoy your gingerbread if there is any left!!
ReplyDeleteWren x
What an excellent festive season! And after all that, a goof off day is perfect. Keep on enjoying those joyful moments!
ReplyDeleteA Christmas well celebrated. We didn't do Christmas crackers this year for the first time in a long time. We watched the midwives too a nice down time after a busy day.
ReplyDeleteHappy new year

Freezing rain coming in for us tonight
You must be a LITTLE tired:) I remember the days when one kept the Littles busy..That's what makes them happy and we end up HAPPY tired..All worth it..Then you go to bed and relive every precious moment.I replay happiness..Forged in my nana memory bank.I am glad you had fun..I followed an IGer ..Anita at tasty entertaining..she left this year after a most courageous battle with cancer. Her trick for Gingerbread houses was a caramel.. I'll try and find and send to you for next yr..This was my first CTM Xmas special I didn't LOVE.
ReplyDeleteWatched Goodby June also this season..Helen Mirren,Kate Winslet..Great acting..I love how Helen M can be a diva or no makeup.. etc..a true actress..And what's not to love about KW?You showed everyone how much you love them..:)Even not 100%Kudos.
Such wonderful Christmas memories love the precious family photos. Our Christmas week was very blessed too surrounded by lots of family and friends over that week-Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great holiday week! Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteForgot to say..we had snow snow and more snow:)
ReplyDeleteI used to decorate gingerbread houses with my college friends and we only got the ones you had to assemble once - after that we bought the assembled ones and then shifted to sugar cookies. They can be quite the production to assemble!!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a great holiday! Taco got a cat LEGO from Phil’s mom! Paul will assemble it for him. But he will be excited to have a LEGO cat to play with.
I hope you’ve had some quiet days of recovery!!
Looks like a wonderful Christmas with family. Watching the kids open gifts is priceless. Decorating cookies is so fun, plus eating them as well.Cheers to you and a happy restful new year.
ReplyDeleteGoodness! You gave everyone plenty to do, including yourself.
ReplyDeleteYour table is lovely--so special.
I love Call The Midwife. So happy that I found that show!
What an exciting time Jeanie...so much to do with your lovely family. all your activities will bring special memories in years to come. I don't think I am familiar with Reindeer Games but it sounds like fun. Happy New Year to all!
ReplyDeleteWhat a very merry time! I adore all your tablescapes and that felted snowman is a treasure. The mural in Jackson is very impressive too. The picture of you and Rick with the grands is my favorite (it's your smile, I tell you!).
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your down time. I've begun "putting away Christmas" so I can start the New Year afresh.
There is something wonderful about a breakfast bake. What will you add to make it a 10? Sounds like a fun thing to do. True on the gingerbread being a longer project. Does look fun though.
ReplyDeleteYour table looks pretty. Love the little hats!
Happy Christmas. Happy 2026.
It looks like great fun with the gingerbread, food, and togetherness. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I think your gingerbread house roof came off for two reasons. One, you need to put a solid line of frosting to completely cover the edge of the narrow edges on the house walls. You had too many bare places. And two, it looks like your frosting wasn't stiff enough to set up hard, fast enough. But the most important thing you nailed---being grateful it was just a roof on a gingerbread house that came off, not your real place.
ReplyDeleteDear Jeanie,
ReplyDeleteOh, I have to say, this year we were among those who didn't celebrate multiple Christmases, just our little celebration for the two of us, because we had the flu and had to cancel pretty much everything. But today we were already able to do something small (go out for lunch) with friends – which means things are looking up!
How wonderful that you had fun with your family. The gingerbread house looks like fun too – even if it still needs a bit of DIY work to become habitable 😉. You're absolutely right, we all probably had a much better Christmas than the people in Ukraine or in other war zones and crisis areas. It's important to be aware of that – and to enjoy the life we have in any case!
I wish you and your family a happy and healthy New Year!

Jeanie, you had a fun-filled Christmas! The boys are growing and are both handsome! Now you need to rest and take it easy for a few days!
ReplyDeleteThis is what it is all about, FAMILY, LOVE, Sharing...etc. Hugs, too! Sandi
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet post - love all the fun family activities and photos. Too funny about the gingerbread house. I've always wanted to make one but was always too scared! Lol! Love your pretty table setting and all the delicious-sounding food. A very busy holiday season always demands a good rest afterwards! Hope you have a Happy New Year and best wishes for a joyful year ahead. x Karen
ReplyDeleteWishing you fun filled holidays! The Ginger Bread lesson was thoughtful of you. I loved the feast and good to see the family get together. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteIf you have ever seen the Great British Baking Show, you know that even the best of amateur bakers have trouble with gingerbread houses. That's part of the fun, I think!
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun.
ReplyDeleteI know a kid who might like the Flipbook Kit. I'm putting that on a list of ideas for future gifts -- thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a lovely Christmastide for all involved!
I also enjoyed The Kings Speech and Call the Midwife. I chose the service at St. Martin-in-the-Fields on Trafalgar Square and it was lovely.
What fun! You had an action-packed Christmas, that's for sure. Just love it! I agree about Ukraine. No merry Christmas for them. So sad.
ReplyDeleteThat was certainly a busy Christmas with family and looks like a good time was had by all. Perhaps you will be able to finish the Lego cat gift, Jeanie. Our Christmas and New Year's will be spent at home and we will visit family later after having seen everyone at Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI needed that reminder to smile and keep on tapping! haha, but I'm glad you had a good Christmas celebration, I hope you find some time to rest now.
ReplyDeleteNever a dull moment with you..Always busy doing fun things...Glad everyone was able to get together..
ReplyDeleteEverything all looked so wonderful! Your table setting was amazing. Janice

That church is gorgeous, and what a meaningful first Mass for him as Priest. Wishing you a happy and peaceful New Year!
Such lovely Christmases you all had! So glad you all could get together! I miss decorating cookies with little ones. Next year I will be able too.
ReplyDeleteYour table set for Christmas with Spode plates is so pretty! I love Spode Christmas plates!
Lots of fun was had. Good for you! Now rest!
Happy New Year, my friend!
LOL, I love your gingerbread house, it makes me smile because it's so relatable. That's kind of what mine would look like if I tried to make one, I'm sure. Thank you so much for sharing this : ))
ReplyDeleteYes. I hope the United States will help Ukraine. Ingo´s Gingerbread house still waits - we were too tired and are still, quite a year this was.
ReplyDeleteYum food and such nice memories!
Wow on the mural. And the set table!
To a happy, healthy 2026 soon!
:)
