Postcards From (Mostly) the Lake -- Art, Eagles, Harry and Tomatoes!

It has been quite a week! The day after Rick's baseball birthday gig, I took off for the lake solo, to spend a few days in the north before my ear procedure. It is, as always, lovely -- but also very smoky and hazy from the Canadian wildfires. It was a little hard on the eyes, the sinuses and the lungs with air quality falling well into the high yellow and sometimes red zone. We had our share of foggy mornings, too.

So, there were times I was inside when I would have preferred to be out! I suspect many are feeling this here in the US. But certainly our Canadian friends and neighbors are having it much worse -- the smoke, the haze and the damage.

it was a quiet few days, with otherwise lovely weather. There was time for painting, reading and walking. I also got the cottage in order for our upcoming weekend with Molly and the little guys! Clean beds, food in the freezer, tidying up. All good!

And, it was a great time for nature, too, though mostly photographs of the heart. The very first thing I saw when I looked out the window on one very early morning was Harry North, the graceful blue heron. He was stalking in the shallows, and bent his glorious neck to nab part of his morning's catch.

I was luckier with Eddie the Eagle! My first sighting was in flight with no camera. But a few days later, he flew right up into a tree two doors away -- and I was able to walk much closer!

Isn't he magnificent? He was huge and sat there for so very long!

Do any of my bird buddies here know why his mouth is always open? I watched/photographed him for about 20 minutes and I don't think he closed it!

And just when you thought you wouldn't see more natural wonders, look who showed up! Harry North!

As I mentioned above, my initial sighting was a memory of the heart, around 6:30 in the morning, peeking out of my bedroom window when I was up by myself. But when I was here with Rick and the kids, another peek yielded another look. I was quite sure I'd missed him again, but then, there he was an hour or so later, walking the beach.

He was farther down and these are probably a bit fuzzy. But I caught him!

(Best of all, he has a heron friend, a mate I presume. I don't have a photo of the two together I dare share -- there is half a bird on each side! But I saw it! Evidence!

I also enjoyed some online painting/tutorial workshops, with varying degrees of success. Terry Runyan, who is a favorite of mine, had another of her "cat" workshops. I'm not that fond of this one (cats in a garden). I can do better. Much better. But it's a good jumping off spot for future work.

This one, by Jessica Panzarino, was "Painting the Galaxy." And I LOVED it! I loved it so much that I did three versions, large, medium and card-sized. I will do more of these and in different colors and tones.

My tomato crop started coming in -- don't get excited. These are salad size tomatoes, about the size of a large lime. But so delicious!

I made a fake-caprese salad with them -- thinly sliced and salted, lots of torn basil and feta (instead of mozzarella) cheese, with balsamic glaze. Divine!

And I've very nearly finished the England journal -- just one more spread to do. I'll finish it at art camp but we have other tutorials and workshops up our sleeves for that one!

Thanks for many kind comments and good wishes on my lab tests. Most of them came back as good or better than they had been in ages. But one rather nasty one popped in -- my pseudonas aerginosa bug has ramped up and so back on the big girl drugs. The worst part is I can't eat anything I like on one of them. No citrus, soy, red wine, hard cheeses, most breads, no cured meats like salami, bacon, sausage, no blue, feta or gorgonzola, pizza, pickled things, chocolate or (GASP!) red wine! I can have most fruit, most veg, rice, pasta, cereal, mozzarella, eggs, salad, white wine. (If you eat the wrong stuff, your BP can spike dangerously high.) I had to do this last year during art camp, too. The good (?) thing is that the drugs require prior auth from the insurance company so I decided I'll wait till after Monday to start and at least have some red wine on my birthday!

The ear procedure went well enough, though results are too early to tell.

I had a tube put in one ear to help drain a middle ear infection and they did a procedure to open the eustachian tube on that side to help prevent it getting blocked again. I had to take some anti-anxiety/relaxation meds at home before. After I got back (with a screaming sore throat -- all I ate that day was ice cream), I slept for about six hours and went to bed early. Hopefully, it will be effective.

I would rather be thinking about this!

  2. That ear procedure sounds a bit harrowing. I hope all goes well. Your meds cut out practically every good food, bah humbug.

  3. When the weather is excessively hot, Jeanie, birds pant to dissipate heat. The fancy term for this activity is gular fluttering. In view of numerous cogent avian observations of late consider yourself well on the way to successfully completing Bird Appreciation 101! It is hereby so decreed!

  4. Oh boy- I hope the ear procedure helps a lot! About the eagle, it could just be how it cools down . When hens are hot, they open their beaks. As long as they aren’t “gasping”, it’s usually just a way to regulate their temperature.
The tomatoes look great! Most of mine are still green, but I like a a presence salad, too. - Jenn

  5. I love the photo's of the eagle. You were really lucky to see one so close up in the wild. It has been bad with the smoky, hazy air. Even we have been suffering from the smog from the wildfires in Southern Ontario. I have no idea how those poor people right in the thick of things are managing to cope with it all. Get well soon!

  6. I'm sorry to hear you have been sick. 🍵

The photos are wonderful. I stayed a little too long at the salad photo and the boys on the beach made me smile.

  7. Glad to hear the ear procedure went well! Now we will cross our fingers that the fussy medicine does it's stuff too.

  8. Glad most of the tests came back positive. Too bad about needing the antibiotics. Those are supper eagle views. Today we were at the lake and for the first time I saw an eagle there too. It's pretty cool, isn't it? And Happy birthday. I hope you enjoy a big glass of wine before you start those antibiotics too. Have a great start to the new week. hugs-Erika

  9. All of your photos and paintings are beautiful! Magnificent birds and the sun shimmering on the water in your second photo is gorgeous!

Ear procedures can be tricky. As far as the wildfires go, it is indeed hard on the eyes and lungs. I don't go out on those days if I don't need to, it just isn't good.
Thank you so much for sharing your lovely photos!

  10. Birds will breathe like that (pant) with their mouths open when it is hot or they are really stressed. Maybe the smoke was bothering them, too? Isn't he/she beautiful!
Nice to see Harry, too. :)
Glad your ear tube is in. I hope it will help. Sorry about the sore throat, though.
The cats are cute--but those galaxies!! Wow! They are quite special.
Sorry you can't eat the things you want for a while. Glad you got to have some red wine for your birthday! Happy birthday!!
The grandsons will make it all better. ;)

  11. Boo to those health problems. Hopefully, they will all work out.

We had smoky weather, but it’s clearer now. Unfortunately, it is also blazing hot. Oh well,

    Happy Birthday.

  14. Well well, I love the mix of art, nature, and tasty tomatoes. Hoping your ear heals smoothly and glad you’re getting that birthday red wine in first

  15. Despite the challenges of smoke and health hurdles, you found moments of peace, beauty, and resilience

  16. I know from my late husband's experience as a nurse that Pseudomonas aeruginosa is nothing to fool around with. I hope they come up with an effective treatment for that bug. It's wonderful that you are able to continue your wonderful summertime activities, which I imagine are both nourishing and healing of soul and body <3

  17. So much going on in your life!
And so much beauty on your lake!
Great art and.... so darn sorry about you not... see.. I can eat anything and Ingo... like you. It hurts. Not fair. What is life without fav foods (and drinks). Hope you get "back to normal" very soon.

  18. You have been busy. I love the photos of all the bird life and I know the smoke can be a real issue for almost everyone in North America. The wildfire season started early this year. Let's hope it will end soon. I must have missed something about your ear issue. Is it a problem of fluid in the ear? I do hope them putting something in there to drain the fluid will help you. Hugs. xx

  19. Happy Birthday Jeanie! Enjoy your red wine. I hope your ear is feeling better. Great captures of the Eagle, Harry North and the ducks. The wildfire smoke looks and sounds awful. The sunset is lovely. Love your paintings. Take care, have a wonderful week.

  20. Enjoy your birthday and I hope you're on the mend soon!
I love the galaxy artwork. And hey, even though the cats aren't your favorite piece of work, it's all practice and it's all good.

  21. Good morning beautiful post! we had poor air quality here as well-but not as bad as yours. I loved seeing the red sun here too and the moon was awesome last week too.
Good wishes for your ear, loved seeing your art too-hugs

  22. Happy birthday and get well soon..I know easier said than done.I have a severely pinched nerve that is halting all my beloved activities.

  23. All of those health issues sound rather harrowing -- and no red wine? Humbug! As for your eagle, I often see the same behavior in our mallards and other birds during very hot weather. It's a way they help to cool themselves, panting like a dog. How wonderful to be able to see the behavior in an eagle!

  24. I find your blog very therapeutic. You live in a beautiful area, and it is reflected in your art. Take care, dear friend, you will recover soon.

  25. Happy Birthday. So glad almost all labs are good, except for the nasty one. The ear procedure doesn’t sound fun, but really needed. Always good to see nature.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Great photos, especially of Eddie! I have no idea why his mouth is open -- I wonder if he was just overheated, or could it be a response to the air quality?

Were you symptomatic for the bacteria before the tests? If not, is it essential to get back on the meds? I don't know anything about this particular bug.

  27. Being on that drug takes all the fun out of eating. Hope you don't have to be on it long! Best of luck that your surgery goes/or went well. Love you birds shots.

  28. I feel for my Ontario relatives. The smoke is bad. But we are getting it here in the Midwest too, and it has ruined our summer, which has to be spent mostly indoors!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Happiest of birthdays to you, Jeanie! Drink that red wine and indulge in those foods you can't have later (how sad!). I have a history of eustachian tube issues (tubes as a 10 yr old, and collapsing of the tube well into adulthood on numerous occasions). It's really hard to deal with. I hope you're doing well now. Your Eddie Eagle is so majestic! And that salad looked divine. I know you're looking forward to art camp and the visit fro m Molly and the boys. Enjoy!

  30. Did the doctor just make you give up all the most delicious things in the world? Ugh.

We've been planning to come to Upper Michigan for a weekend with my daughter-in-law and son, but now I'm afraid the air will be too smoky for us. My daughter-in-law was first a reporter for a station there, and she has fond memories of that place.

  31. First of all the boys are growing up so fast. Beautiful photos, and what fun a lovely art. Have a great week.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love your Galaxy paintings! Sure hope you do more, in other colorways -- it would be fun to see them! And great pictures of your local eagle, and Harry North. Glad to hear your ear surgery is behind you and hopeful that the psuedomonas a. is soon gone as well -- can't imagine dealing with that during this season of terrible air quality has been easy. Enjoy a very happy birthday, and then get well soon!

  33. I was thinking that last week while complaining about our smoky skies too; we really are rather lucky that's all we have to deal with and they aren't anywhere near as bad as they must have been in Canada. So apparently bald eagles pant to keep their temperature down in warm/hot weather so they often perch with their mouths open!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well now you have something in common with my boys because they have both had tubes! Paul got them at 9 months, Will got them at 13 months and again this spring. They are a life saver for those who are prone to ear infections. Will has had one ear infection since getting tubes. It's much easier to treat as we give him drops instead of oral meds.

Good plan to hold off on those big girl drugs until after your bday! What is the exact day? I know it is so close to my mom (14th) and Phil (18th). You August babies have such a fun month for a birthday! Much better than my Feb birthday!

I hope you have a blast at art camp but gah, the diet really does sound quite challenging!!

  35. I am happy that all of your labs were good except that bad one.Your eagle photos are fantastic. Happy birthday and hopefully you will be back soon eating what you enjoy! Take care of yourself, Jeanie!

  36. Birds "pant" when it is hot!!!.I have seen lots of them panting lately...just like us..
    Love your Art ! Fun!
    The boys are getting big!!
That drug sounds more like a punishment than a cure...
I hoe you had a nice birthday !!

  37. Beautiful photos of the birds. Hope your health issues improve with the medication. Keep painting, it looks awesome.

  38. Happy Birthday Beautiful Lady! Hoping you enjoy your special day. I really love the photos of the Eagle and your galaxy paintings. Tomatoes look delicious. Enjoy your upcoming family time.

  39. Hopefully your ear procedure eliminates any further problems. And good luck on taking the medicine. Happy Birthday. Karen (Back Road Journal)

  40. Hope you get better soon. Sounds like punishment to me too, but at least you wont start until after your birthday. BTW Happy Birthday! Love all of the watercolors. Eagles keep their mouths open to cool themselves down. Janice

  41. Smoke from wildfires tend to paint the sun and also the moon in very beautiful brilliant colors, but the poor air quality is a high price to pay for this. So far we have been very lucky this year when it comes to both wildfires in the area (we had a couple) and smoke. Once it was so bad that we wore masks INSIDE the house in addition to air filters running in every room. I hope your air will clear up very soon.
I'm sorry to hear about the Pseudomonas aeruginosa - I googled it and it doesn't sound that good. Darn, not being able to eat all those foods while taking the antibiotica isn't fun at all! But if it helps - is it a ten-day-treatment? At least it's only temporary. The ear treatment doesn't exactly sound like a walk in the park either. I hope the ice cream was delicious!
I love the galaxy painting - I can see that they were fun! The cats are lovely - Terry Runyan has such a great way of painting them. Of course I like all the photos of the eagle and the Great Blue - simply lovely!
    Happy birthday!!!

  42. I’m sorry to hear you are having to deal with the effects of those fires and hope for yours and everyone's sake they will be contained soon. Happy you got to do your favorite three things. Outstanding photos Jeanie, especially of that eagle. From what I remember, birds open their beaks in the heat as a way of cooling down. I have seen our smaller backyard birds do the same thing. Seeing the heron must have been a lovely sight judging by these pictures. Delightful works of art! Your caprese salad looked delicious. Good to hear about the results of your lab tests, except for the one and hope the meds will resolve that one quickly. Have a great week!

  43. Such an impressive and big bird! I can't imagine seeing a bird like that. All we have around here are boring brown birds.

Are you worried about your health when the air quality is so poor?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I envy you these wonderful, quiet days by the lake. Sounds like you also were busy with on-line courses. They are such a treat. You can enroll wherever you are.
I am happy that you are feeling better again. Restricted eating will only be for a short time and it will taste so much better afterwords. The red wine too (hihi).

  45. I'm sorry about the food (and wine!) restrictions, Jeanie. But I'm glad to hear things are under control and you are anticipating a lovely visit with loved ones. Eddie and Harry of the North are very regal!

  47. That salad looks so delicious...I'm just going to have to try that one tonight. How fun to play in paint...the blue pages are such an interesting look, I can imagine using these techniques in some backgrounds or just plaint design pieces. I love the cats...they have that ---I didn't do that look...but they did, ha-ha...glad you are having so much fun at the lake...the wildlife pics are gorgeous! Sandi

  48. Happy Birthday Jeanie :) Your photos of the sun and the reflection in the water is superb and I'm so pleased for you that Harry North showed up and you took some nice photos. The ducks are cute and the photos of the eagle are fantastic. The only bump in the road is your ear infection which I hope clears up soon after having the drainage procedure.I'm glad to hear your tests were OK and hope you feel better soon. Your salad looks yummy and I hope you drank one or two glasses of red wine on your birthday. All the best

  49. Much is going on in your life! I was sorry to read about that nasty bacteria. I had to look that up and it doesn't sound like fun.
I am glad you had a few lake days to relax a bit and to prep for visitors. At least there are a few fun days ahead!
