Postcards From the Lake: Arrival, Eventually!

We've finally arrived at the lake to stay for a bit (end of July; then I'll be back while Rick does a bike hike to Canada, down to New England).

We took off on the same day -- I was about 20 minutes behind Rick and it was a good thing I was! He called me from a road on my route and said he'd had a flat. He does carry a small pump but I had the big one and using that would be faster. So, I stopped for a quick rescue! All was well.

I don't think I could have fit one more thing into my car. The trunk was loaded with plants.

The back seat was full to the top and so was the front, with a tall tomato plant and my computer on the floor of the passenger seat and Lizzie's carrier on the seat itself.

Let me say, it took forever to get unpacked! And I left Rick's stuff in the car for him to unload when he'd arrive two days later.

Most of the first day was spent settling, the second was for chilling out. A good walk, some yard work and then time to both paint and read.

I'm always relieved when he wheels in. This ride was 250 miles and over three days for him. We celebrated with some snacks my friend Jenny sent me from England that I'd been saving for a special occasion. I should have taken a photo! Instead, here's Rick as he started out from home!

Lizzie appears to have adjusted well, picking out new favorite spots to sit. And so far, she has been a hundred-percenter with her litterbox. Knock wood on that one.

On my walk I was able to survey some of the leftover damage from the ice storm this winter.

Many trees were down, big tall ones. I'm guessing these fell as they seem to. If they'd gone across the road it would have been impossible.

Big things are coming up -- guests, the July 4 holiday and a road trip to celebrate the Camster's seventh birthday. So more of that to come. Meanwhile, several of you asked about the recipe for fruit pizza I showed on my Cork Poppers post.

I'm pleased to say Meredith happily shared the recipe for me to share with you. You can just copy and paste it to your computer pictures.

Enjoy!

  3. Glad you were able to come to the rescue for Rick and that he made it safe to the cottage. That fruit pizza looks amazing and will have to try it. TFS the recipe. Janice

  4. What a marathon! Love that you take your plants too.
Enjoy the lake. What a blissful way to spend this hot month.

  5. New frame design makes it difficult to carry a traditional pump..and the small ones take ages! By the way....get that man in track mitts!! They soak up sweat nicely, add a bit of padding and protect hands from a scrape if he doesn't heed the saying.."stay between the hedges and rubber side down"!!
Sad to see the damage to the trees.
    A month by the lake...bliss!!

  6. How did you ever find the pump in your car? I had to smile, but you will be well prepared. And if it was me, my car would look the same. :) Thanks for the fruit pizza recipe. I may have to try that for a summer dessert because it looks great. And it looked great in your cork popper post too. I hope you get nice weather and have a wonderful time all July at the lake. hugs-Erika

  7. What a happy coincidence with that flat!
Made me wondering if you have that, too: Automats like for condoms or cigarettes just with bicycle spare-tyres. Very practical.
Oh, wish Ingo was a bit more sportive...
    Lizzie looks a bit annoyed?
I wish you a very happy time at the lake-please let pics coming... The nearest lake is a 30 minutes walk and... no swimming!
There is another one... you have to go nude. Ingo "forced" me twice - luckily I met no colleague or customer (well, met a female customer, luckily was in the water). Call me prude, it´s not my thing...

    Knocking on wood for you!

  11. Ha! I loved the look inside your car and trunk! What an amazing job of packing -- I would like to see the engineering diagrams that went into organizing that effort! And I also enjoyed the green theme of this post: every single picture, right down to Lizzie's eyes, has something bright and beautiful and green in it. Thanks, too, for the recipe for the fruit pizza -- it reminds me of something I once made for my German class. Looking forward to hearing more of your adventures at the lake!

  12. We are sitting here watching tennis, so I showed Sue Rick’s pic and told her about his incredible cycling feats. I tried to show Lacey your cat, but she looked away disdainfully even though they are adorned similarly. Yours has a bit of a moustache though.

  13. Your post reminded me of when our car was full of tomato plants that I had started in New Hampshire and took to Maine each summer. Enjoy!

  23. One tiny detail in your photos amused me no end. Can you guess what it is? Of course it's the Talenti container being used for your watercolors! I used those for everything from actual freezer containers for leftovers to holders for various kinds of nuts, bolts, and screws. They're also useful as birdfeed scoops, frozen containers of water for coolers, mixing epoxy.... I have to keep eating the stuff, lest I run out of containers!

  35. My trips in the old days looked similarly packed. Loved seeing all the beautiful plants in your trunk! Glad you were behind him when his tire went. I would worry a bit until he came up the drive, too. Such long trips. But the bicyclists I have known in my life LOVE those long treks.

  47. Glad you're at the lake safe and sound, Jeanie. I didn't realize it took Rick that long on bike to get there. You got some pretty plants in the back of your car. I know they will comfort you and make you feel at home there. Lizzie is settling in as well. I love all the trees that surrounded you on your walk, even though some have fallen from the storm. 55. THANK YOU to Meredith for sharing her fruit pizza recipe!
I'm so glad Rick had a fun and safe bicycle ride. Mountain and trail bicycle riding is a very popular Colorado sport and my younger neighbors do these amazing bike rides up and down high mountain passes all the time. My bicycling is done on a gym bike 3 times a week. I'm lucky to do 5 miles in 30 minutes...lol!
Have a wonderful time at your lake house--hope your weather will be good and that you will make amny more happy memories there!
