At Home: More from the Orchid Show

Are you living in a world of white? Our snow is melting and should be much gone by the end of the week (apart from the big drifts where it has been stacked up by plows!) But last week I went for a color burst -- an orchid show.

My friend Barb suggested it and I'm so glad she did. The place was packed with beautiful displays as well as a number of vendors, an art exhibition and one by the local Ikebana group.

I have some photos here, good eye candy for the end of February, with little commentary!

Barb, who knows these things, pointed out the tiny wax flowers in this arrangement. They were so fragrant!

And there is something about the pinks and purples I really love.

But then, a lovely, simple white or cream has its charms!

And so did this interesting spotted yellow one.

This one was quite interesting, too.

As we were leaving, I was parked by a barn and thought I'd do a quick photo. Here is what our day looked like -- white sky!

And, taking a page from AC and Tom's photo editing ideas, a couple of different versions and cropping a bit. I did focal color. . .

. . . black and white. . .

. . . and blue sky.

What do you think? (I think I like the orchids better!)

  1. An orchid show must have been a great tonic in the dead of winter. Spring is almost here though!

  3. Such beauty and colour. Oh my! It's good to experiment with the photo edits. I usually like to keep my photos true to the way I snapped them so as not to mislead anyone about my photographic skills, lol. I do like using the cropping feature though.

  4. Hah! well done with photo play. I once walked into a display greenhouse in winter and found it utterly wonderful and charming.

  5. There is an annual orchid show here that showcases the incredible orchid growers nearby — it’s an amazing hobby and so many participants!

  7. ...horticulture is my passion and was my vocation for 50 years, but since I live in barn heaven it's one of my other passion. Jeanie, thanks for brightening up my gloomy morning.

  8. A soothing balm for a cold winter day. Those orchids are really beautiful. Did you have a favorite. I too favor the purple and pink.

  9. The orchids are beautiful! I couldn't quite manage to swing by, so I'm extra grateful for your photos. I did get myself a big bunch of wax flowers at Trader Joe's this weekend, they seem to last for weeks, Jeanie!

  10. Those orchids are amazing. I would love that show. I'm glad you shared it so I can enjoy it from my couch. And lucky you to have your snow gone by the end of the week. I am even more jealous of that than of the orchid show. :) Grin. And nice barn. Have a super rest of your day. hugs-Erika

There is nothing like a red barn surrounded with snow...We have many of those here and they are so pretty in the Winter....Thanks so much for stopping by!!

  14. Those orchids are gorgeous! I was gifted an orchid years ago but I could not manage to keep it alive. I do not know what I did wrong! I am tempted to buy another one but fear that it's not the plant for a person like me with a black thumb! The flowers Phil got for me for Vday (for free!) are still going strong. The roses are probably the most beautiful I've ever had.10 days later, they still look amazing!

I like the blue sky picture best! Most of our snow is gone thanks to the 50 degree days we've had. I'll take it!

  15. The grey sky is so punishing. I definitely prefer the orchids!

  17. Oh my! I shouldn't be surprised, but I didn't know there were so many different kinds of gorgeous orchids!
When it comes to photos I guess I'm pretty plainly pleased. I liked the first one the best. Just looks like the unaltered reality to me. ;)

  25. How are there things this beautiful in our world?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well, I like your barn photos a lot but those orchids are exquisite and such a wonderful variety of colors. It has been a very long time since I saw this many orchids in one place. Thanks so much for sharing them Jeanie :)

  27. The orchids are exceptional. What a beautiful show! Thanks for sharing the photos of the orchids and the snow.

  28. So so pretty! I have a few friends who grow orchids and have some absolute beauties. What a treat to see a whole show of them.
That barn is just about perfect for photographers, and for playing with techniques.

  29. That orchid show looks amazing -- what gorgeous colors! One of those oddball factoids I've held onto over the years is that you can find orchids anywhere on the planet... even Antarctica! I do love your barn pictures, though, and I hope you keep playing around with your photo editing tools.... that blue sky totally snagged my attention!

  30. What a beautiful burst of color in the middle of winter! Orchids are always a joy to see, and I love the variety you captured. The spotted yellow one is especially striking! The wax flowers sound lovely too—I can almost imagine their scent. Your photo edits are fun to see, but I agree, the orchids steal the show!

  31. Such wonderful, fresh, bright colors, this was a treat! Here it´s another grey, rainy day, at least not too cold.

  32. It is hard to beat the orchid photos. So vivid and colorful, it really does make one think of spring. Our snow is gone back home, but I think it is a false spring, there is more snow to come!

  33. Orchids are outstanding:) Shape ,form,color..Exquisite.I am sure you love d the show!

  34. It must be orchid season. They're arriving in all the grocery stores now, although the commercially available ones aren't as colorful as these. To be honest, orchids don't make my heart go pitty-pat -- except for our native varieties. There's nothing like the thrill of coming across an orchid in nature. I like your original barn photo best. Everyone edits their photos, if only by choosing what to focus on and by cropping, but it's easy to go too far, like oversaturating colors. (You didn't, but a lot of people do.)

  35. The orchid show looks so lovely. A nice variety and a great pink me up during the chilly days.

  36. I always buy orchids from Costco. Right now, I have purple ones and white ones. I am a diehard fan of orchids.

  37. I've been to an orchid show before and these are wonderful. The flowers are so beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The barn looks nice both with the wite sky as well as with the blue one.

  39. I agree that despite the photo tweaks, a barn can't compete with an orchid show LOL. It must have been so good to surround yourself with those bursts of colour. Good to see orchids in arrangements too. Usually I only ever see single ones in pots. They're a plant that always intrigues me - they last so long and have such varied shapes, and I also believe they need very different care from most other flowers I see.

  40. Wow! What a great show. The photos are fabulous. I do like the barn too.

  41. Barns make grand photos, but they can't compete with orchids:) Though, they certainly have their own majesty, don't they?

  42. Beautiful orchids..I usually always had one blooming but have stopped that practice...I get impatient for them to rebloom but they are beautiful..

  51. I didn't realize there were so many types of orchids until I visited Helen at Kew and their orchid festivals. Such beauties, but SO expensive, too. Love the barn shots, too, dear Jeanie.

  52. The orchids are stunning and I would have loved the show. I visited with high school friends and one of the friend’s mother for a luncheon recently. I took her an orchid, she is 92 and looks great! Happy March and take care of yourself. I am recovering slowly from pneumonia.
