Art Journal Check-In

It's been awhile since I actually picked up my art journal and worked within that format. I've been having such fun with the pet-painting class and the Southern Exposure workshops that my own journal has been buried under a larger pile of art supplies being used for other projects! So, I thought I'd catch you up on a few things -- some of which you may have seen here before and some that are new.First up, the title page! NO RULES!

Here's a look at that series of the same image I kept doing over and over. I'm ready to tackle it one more time, this time not in gouache as these are but in pan watercolors and on a different paper, just to see how it plays.

Here are two images on watercolor postcards from the lake.

This one was done last summer from a vintage postcard. The perspective is a bit wonky. There's also a lot of pen and ink on the it.

This version is from a photo.

I still don't have the color and movement right. I've done this one twice so far (postcard above and larger) and just can't get the color right but I'll keep trying. Next time I'll try a cold press paper.

Here's a fun and fanciful one!

I haven't played with my linoleum blocks for too long! But here are the first two things I've done -- the cat (which I showed here when we were printing) and the Christmas card.

I'm not very good at birds -- have to work on this one some more! It's from last summer.

And then there are "places." I love painting from places I've been -- these are all from photos. The first is from Kinderdijk in the Netherlands. The painting can't begin to match the wonderful day spent with my blog friend Tara and her husband David. It will be a memory for a lifetime.

Of course, I had to tackle one of my favorite images from the Shaker Village!

The fascinating Montmartre area (postcard).

And this one needs no explanation! (Also postcard.)

Lately I've felt in creative overdrive -- wanting to paint, glue, stick things together, try new techniques and write (I'm working on family history, too!) Coming up in May, a friend and I are hosting our next make-and-take tea. Here's a sneak preview of the project. These are silk scarves. I did the top two and my friend Barb the one on the bottom.

For more on the technique of these, please visit Bleubeard and Elizabeth. This link and this one too will direct you directly to the process but be sure to check out her other tutorials if you're interested! It's tremendously fun!

Jeanie! You are so talented! I love it when you share the creations you are working on. Even though you note things you aren't happy with, from my point of view they are beautiful! My favorite is the Eiffel Tower one as that's a structure I'm obsessed with! But I love that whimsical cafe one, too.

How I just love all your art projects. The silk scarves are wonderful, but so are the postcards, and the art journal. How I wish I could come and play with you.

OMGosh, if I had known you were going to share your silk scarves with us today, I would have been on the computer earlier in the day. They turned out incredibly beautiful and I am IN LOVE with all of them.

I was also thrilled to see your latest art, too. You draw so well, you color so well, and you make fantastic art. My favorite gate is number 2, but they are all wonderful. I love the Eiffel Tower and the Montmartre, but the Shaker Village put a BIG smile on my face.

I'm really thrilled with your art, and super impressed with those scarves. Have a fun weekend.

I enjoyed your watercolors, especially the sunset and the Eiffel Tower transposed out of the city. I don't think you can see the sky through the lower arches\ at that angle without any buildings, but I like seeing that in your image.

Dear, dear Jeanie, I LOVE YOUR WORK. I believe that every single one of these is so well done, and with NO RULES, I think any of our attempts have the chance to break free into self-discovery. We are only holding the brush, the pen, the camera.

I really, really, love your work.

Beautiful work - all of it. I do love your french touches - the eiffel tower and Montmatre. The last few images are very special - colour and blending. Thank you for sharing these developments. We're pretty lucky to be witness to this beauty.

Woo hoo! What a lovely energy you have Jeanie, we can feel the creative overdrive from here. Those scarves are looking sensational, I wish I was closer to join in the fun at your make-and-take tea. All your artwork is an impressive reminder of some happy memories. If all goes according to plan, I might be off to Paris soon, so I particularly liked that one :)
Have a great week!

I love seeing all these new pieces.I especially like the idea of painting the same thing more than once. It is a really good way to try out different techniques and also to get those techniques so you know which way it looks the best. Plus it lets your hand gets to know how to make that image so if you ever want to use it again, it will be easy. I am going to do that. But most importantly, you have been busy and enjoying this finally arrived spring. Happy rest of your weekend. Hugs-Erika

I'm especially taken with the windmill, and the Shaker village -- as well as the linoleum cuts, which you already know I like. The silk scarves remind me of Liberian tie-dye, although the different fabric lends a more water-colorish look.

I'm glad you're back to your art journal. That really is such a good idea, and you're awfully good at filling it up!
